Follow me to Cross Creek!

Good morning! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

We had an adventure....to Cross Creek...the 'real' Florida!

First we watched the movie, (It's WONDERFUL!)

my hubby did some research on the computer...

and off we went to Cross Creek!

Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings moved to this rural part of Florida in 1928.

This 72 acre orange grove and her Cracker neighbors were the inspiration for her writing. Her best known book, The Yearling won a Pulitzer Prize in 1939 and was later made into a movie.

We took the tour of the house and I just had to include a few photos of this!

Her writing table and a bed for summer time sleeping...on the porch!

I found it interesting that she had so many famous people visit her there, Gregory Peck, Margaret Mitchell, Ernest Hemingway and Robert Frost.

Her Bedroom and private bath had it's own entrance from the back porch!

I love this linoleum! My Dad had this same pattern in an old cabin he owned in North Carolina!

I loved this sweet table in her dining room!

Her garden...

and a trail we hiked

to see the Cypress Knees (it was not swampy...which surprised me!)

My husband and I both have copies of the book Cross Creek from the library

and we are enjoying learning even more!

What a neat experience....to watch the movie, visit Cross Creek and take a tour of the house and then to read the book for even more stories and details! What a blessing to live in a country so rich in stories of the past!

I hope your week is filled with adventure! sun

Thanks for the movie recommendation. I look forward to seeing it. I'm guessing you have seen Carl Sandburg's home from your other home? Aren't they fascinating? Maybe I'll get to see this one one day.

Hi Diane! What a wonderful trip you and your husband shared. I would have loved to have been there, too. I really love adventures like that. And that house and garden is to die for....love it! I have seen "The Yearling" many times, but it always makes me cry. I think I'll check into finding the book, Cross Creek, at the library.

Thanks so much for sharing!

XOXO,

Cyndi

P.S. I did have a great Florida excursion myself last week. I went to Bok Tower - that also was a great experience!

What a neat tour. Thanks for sharing it with us. I thought that linoleum was carpet. Never seen anything like that before. Thanks for always leaving such nice comments.

Isn't that the coolest place ever? I love going there... it's so "Old Florida." Is her "duck pond" still there? It's a cane syrup kettle that had been used to cook down sugar cane into sugar.

What a wonderful way to enjoy a book and also learn more about the author. I've visited a few author homes in the past and always found them interesting. Cross Creek looks so lush and green and pretty. I read The Yearling but never read that book _-I will have to see if I can reserve a copy at the library.

Oh wow! That is awsome. I am so envious of the beauty of your adventures. I know that envy is a sin but Florida is just gorgeous and I would love to see some of the wonderful sites you two have been on. How do you find all these great places.
Lucky you

I loved this post Diane...and you've inspired me to sit and read. Now that I'm not working like a mad hatter women I can get back to burying my nose in a book and reading about life at Cross Creek.
I loved her simple life and how she entertained and welcome such actors.
