Vintage Kitchen Linens!

When we moved to Florida it didn’t take me long to find some great places to shop! But I drove by a Christian Thrift store for a long time before I stopped in to see what it was all about! Now my car can’t drive by without a ‘quick’ stop! My car just turns in before I know it! lol Everything moves through the store with lightening speed...including ME!

DSCN2443

They price things SO low!

DSCN2450

And one day last week I hit the jackpot for Kitchen linens...

 DSCN2449

old stripey kitchen towels!

DSCN2445

DSCN2446

DSCN2447

I even went BACK and got the holey one that I passed up the first time!

DSCN2448

But the MOST interesting linen hanging with the others was this one!

DSCN2439

I’ve done a lot of baking over the years...

 DSCN2440

and I’m older than most of my blog buddies...

 DSCN2441

but I have NEVER seen one of these!

DSCN2442

Have you? It’s a heavy cotton fabric and I washed it and even pressed it a bit! Have you ever seen anyone use one?

And while you are here...do you have ANY idea what THIS IS?

DSCN2454

It’s heavy steel and very retro...but what was it for originally?

Irish linen dishtowels! Wow...Did you ever score!!! Love the colors! I've never seen the pastry cloth either. Wish I could help with the steel rack...sorry!

Spreading the Love! said...

Love those dishtowels! And I have no idea what that is. Maybe a pie crust measure?

Chelise said...

LOVE the colors of the dishtowels! I'm guessing the steal rack is a cookbook holder. Here is an example of another one made of metal: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?sku=17575767&utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=shopping

Happy VTT!

What a great find on the towels. And here's my two cents on the Pastry Linen...I used to have a large, thin plastic sheet that Tupperware made, years ago. In the center were all sorts of circles in graduated sizes...it was for rolling pie crusts and pastries out on. I never used the circles, but I am imagining that is what you have, too...only in linen form. Keeps it from sticking to your counter (with enough flour) while rolling out, and measures all at the same time?!

You scored big time on those towels! I have seen a pastry cloth before, but it was printed on oilcloth. The thing with the spoons must have held some kitchen decoration is what I'm thinking. I'm not really sure, though. What are you going to use it for? is my question. Great finds! That is one awesome thrift store you shop at!

Happy@Home said...

I think you and I drive the same kind of car :).
Great finds on your linen towels. I have never seen a pastry cloth like that, however I do own one made by TupperWare that looks similar except it is plastic.
Not sure what the steel rack was originally for. I might use it near the stove and put a cute bottle of EVOO and a flavored vinegar in it. The possibilities are endless for a creative lady like you. Have fun.

Shellbelle said...

You found a lot of goodies!

I used to have a pastry frame like that one. It had inserts that went into the two opposite hems and then the other sides each had a heavy wire thingy that stretched the cloth tight. The wooden rolling pin had a cloth cover over it also and together it made rolling out a pie crust so easy! Nothing ever stuck and I loved it. Mine eventually started falling apart in the washer, wish I had hand washed it, because I've never seen another.

Someone gave it to me many years ago, it had belonged to her mother and since my friend didn't bake she passed it on to me.

Donnie said...

You had some really great finds. My grandmother had a pastry cloth that was similar but I don't know what the other thing is.

Until I saw this post, I had forgotten all about the pastry cloth my mother used to have. Don't you just love a thrift shop with *low* prices!

Vintage Gal said...

Oh my gosh ~ what fabulous finds. I have a weakness for vintage kitchen linens and just LOVE yours! that pastry cloth is wonderful. I don't know what the retro shelf would be used for ~ your linens have made me smile ;-)

Vee said...

That's a shop to frequent for sure. What wonderful linens! I remember my mother having one of those pastry canvases. The last item? I have no idea, but it looks as if it would make a great shelf or a counter caddy.

Love those linens and your mystery items, thrift store trips are so fun...how lucky you are your car knows the way!

Great finds. I love those old linens and the colors are wonderful. I seem to remember my grandmother using a pastry canvas.
I'm sure you're happy you didn't pass the store up:)

What a neat pastry cloth! Reminds me of the Tupperware plastic sheet that I had for so many years.

I love old linens too, and those are fantastic!

Cyndi said...

Oh Wow, Diane, did you ever hit the jackpot with those linen dishtowels! They are the absolute best for drying dishes...they don't leave any lint behind. As for the pastry cloth...my grandmother used one all the time. She would use it to roll out her dough for pie crusts...always using the 9" circle, but sometimes making it larger for a 10" pie. She would also roll out cookie dough on them. You just put a little flour on the cloth and then roll out your dough...the cloth keeps the dough from sticking to the counter top. That is an awesome find! I haven't seen one of them since I was a kid.

Could that steel rack be a cookbook holder? I can't tell how large it is...is it big enough for you to have a cookbook open to a recipe without the other pages falling closed? Just a guess! It's cute, though, no matter what it is! :o)

XOXO,

Cyndi

Love Love Love the dishtowels! My mom gave me a set a few years ago from an estate sale in Southeastern Ohio. They are made from flour sacks and they are a set with the days of the week....looks like they were made in Amish country. I really treasure them. Enjoy your new goodies!

Pam Kessler said...

I'm drooling over your dishtowels. Never saw one of those pie crust things. Interesting, yet I find it weird it's made of fabric. Doesn't seem that sanitary by todays standards. Looks cool though!

Susan said...

I so love your kitchen towels!!

Tammy@Beatrice Banks said...

Wow! You really got some goodies! I've never seen a pastry cloth either. Have no idea what the rack is for. I guess the openings are too large to be a plate rack.

Cool linens. i have never seen the cloth, however, pampered chef makes a plastic version of the same thing. You scored for sure. Enjoy. And thanks for sending your new friend over to me...I appreciate that.

Hello--what pretty old towels. I LOVE vintage tea towels. The pie mat is cool too. I've seen plastic ones before, but not a canvas one. A friend of mine uses a mat of some kind, not plastic and it doesn't have the guides, but I've never seen an old one. Very cool!!

Coloradolady said...

I have never seen a cloth like that either. I remember an old tupperware plastic type one, but never cloth.

I am so jealous of your linens!! What great finds. I have not found any towels like yours in a while..ready for sales to start back up!

Happy VTT!

Those are fantastic dish towels!! They look as those they were never used!

I use to use a pastry cloth until I bought a marble pastry board. I really liked it.
You can find pastry cloths at a cake supply along with a rolling pin cloth. Plus if you have an ACE Hardware store, they carry a pastry cloth with frame just like the old ones!
BTW, I bought my first pastry cloth at Wal-mart a few years ago.

Wow, Diane, you found some pretty things! I love the linen tea towels made in Ireland and the pastry cloth. I imagine the pastry cloth makes rolling out crusts and putting them on top of a pie tin so easy.

I think the wire reack is a condiment holder ... so cute!

Oh my goodness you hit the mother lode o Irish dish towels! You must have the luck of the Irish! *winks* What a score! And yes I have seen one before. My mom used one just like that when I was growing up, and I have one in plastic now. I don't know what your rack was used for but it would look really cute holding some cook books? Vanna

I did not grew up to a family who is really to baking. My mother is more on cooking and experimenting different dishes. But I grew up with a lot of dish towels in the kitchen too. Although ours was not as beautiful as what you have. ;-)

I think the metal rack can be used to store cook books or bottles containing kitchen spices, etc.

I have some very old linen cloths just like the ones you found that I think must either have come from my aunt or mother in law, still use them but they are getting very thin!

Such terrific kitchen linens! REAL linen too! Oh, I wish we had a decent thrift store around here, but we don't! I think the metal piece perhaps held condiments for the table or picnic table (ketsup, mustard).

Love the towels. I think the metal rack is a small cookbook holder. Church cookbooks, etc were tiny.

I am having an antique auction on my blog. All sorts of lovely and romantic finds looking for a new home. I hope you'll stop by.

Have a wonderful weekend.

The towel are very nice to dry glasses, i use some .The towel for the pastry is a good idea, but i have never seen one before , the other thing is to hang and maybe to hold table napkins?

Love the linens. The pastry cloth is a great find too, my grandmother still uses one. The metal thing looks like it could be a salt and pepper holder. I have seen some similar to that in old diners and such. Not sure if it is the intended purpose.

Hi Diane...

Ohhh my gosh...you really hit the jackpot, my friend! I just love thrifting!!! Hehe! Love, love, LOVE all of those beautiful vintage linens! You know...they go for big money these days because they are so popular and in big demand! I have even seen some really pretty pillows made using the vintage linens! I love that they have the pretty red stripes on them...bet they look fabulous in your kitchen since you have it done in lighthouses!!!

Ohh my...I'm pretty vintage too and have never seen a pie cloth like that! That is sooo awesome! I think it would look great framed! You know...I think that pretty little metal stand might be a cookbook stand! I have seen some similar! But..you could also put a couple of pretty pots with fresh herbs in it...sooo many different things that you could do with it! I love it! Thanks for sharing all of your pretties with us today...this was such a treat!!!

So happy that you stopped by my place for a visit, dear friend! Thanks for taking a peek at my new spring decor! I always enjoy our visits!!!

Nice linen finds! Glad you have such a great vintage shop. I don't even know how you'd use that pastry fabic; wouldn't the dough stick to it?; well, maybe not with enough flour. But, I'm just not that picky on the size . . . make it big enough and cut off the extra :). Thanks for sharing your finds!

Oh what lovely vintage textiles, lucky you, what a wonderful find! I have never seen the "pastry frame" pastry cloth before, what a neat find! Was the spoon/fork metal stand a holder for salt & pepper perhaps? Looks like it could have hung on the wall as well. Wonderful finds, thanks for sharing and thanks for following my blog, good luck in the PAFA giveaway! Deb

What lovely finds. I like using cotton towels like that the best for drying. They're the best! I have known of pastry cloths and always wanted to try one. I'm not sure what the metal shelf is for.

Diane, the dish towels are great! They're better than terry for drying dishes. I've never seen the pastry one before. I always roll my pie crusts between sheets of waxed paper.
The little iron thing looks like a kitchen shelf of some kind but to hold what I don't know. It's cute though!

Surely by now you know you have a pastry cloth, which is a pretty common item if you make pie crust. It's usually used with a cloth cover for the rolling pin too, and the point is that the dough won't stick to either one. I believe they aren't meant to be washed--the more oil and flour they absorb, the better the non-stick factor. Ones like yours are on eBay right now.

The metal rack looks like a napkin holder to me. Not for square paper napkins, but nicer paper or cloth folded "dinner" napkins.

How did I ever miss this post?? Yes, I have seen a pastry cloth before because my mom has one and I remember her using it all the time when I was a kid. You roll out your pie crusts to the size on he circles. It's a genius idea really. Now I have to ask my mom if she still has it. Thanks for posting this on your New Years Post. Happy New Year my new friend!
