On a Sunday afternoon

We drove past these…

flowersIMG_4446

in front of this cute house.

Then we saw this…

woodyIMG_4435

and turned around!

I had missed good photos of the beautiful yellow flowers but we couldn’t believe our eyes when we spotted this pileated woodpecker alongside the road.

And surprisingly enough…

woodybestIMG_4436

he waited until we turned around and came back for his photo shoot!

It’s the best details of a pileated woodpecker that I’ve ever captured with my camera. (from the car, with traffic coming) lol He finally flew but landed nearby.

I’m joining Saturday’s critters HERE

and I'd Rather B Birdin' .

What an exciting discovery right by the side of the road. He looks like he was hoping you'd take his photo. Maybe he reads your blog :).

Hello Diane,
Thanks for sharing Woody's photos with us. It was kind of him to pose for you
Those yellow flowers are really pretty against the green of the grass.

Diane, what a great find for a birder! (Did you know they're called 'twitchers' in England?) I'm so glad Woody waited for you to get your shots!

What fun - love the cute house and the flowers - but the woodpecker wins the day. They are so rare around here - though we do see them now and then. More often I hear them in the woods across the street from our house. I'm glad he stayed around so you could get his picture.

Wonderful shot of the wood pecker. We have lots of them at the lake house for some reason.

Ah yes, I recognize Mr. Pileated Woodpecker, we call him a house wrecker around here! We had one completely destroy a wooden window frame, he thought his reflection was another woodpecker and kept bashing at the frame to drive (himself!) off!

Isn't it exciting when you get a rare photo? And with birds you just do not get a second chance. We don't have this wood pecker here--I don't think. Great photos. And the little house is just cute.

That's really impressive photography from a moving car! Such great photos of him. We have two very large woodpeckers that enjoy our oak tree at the Aframe. They are a noisy bunch when they are hammering away.
