Cutest and Ugliest

Well, you can’t get any cuter than a baby duck…

wIMG_9723

unless you see a whole flock of them.

And it was so great to see the Papa and Mama to get a good ID.

wIMG_9728

They are Wood Ducks and my Florida Identification book says that they nest in tree cavities.

wIMG_9730

They were moving to this marshy area where they were camofluaged.

Even Papa was hard to see in the tall grasses.

I think this is a Cormorant. But isn’t he the ugliest one you’ve ever seen? I don’t dare crop the photo or zoom in for a closer look. I might lose some readers!

So let’s end this post with the baby Wood Duck family!

Ahhhh!!!!

And yes, on our hike at the Blue Run Park in Dunnellon, FL. we saw them ‘coming and going’.

I’m joining Saturday’s critters HERE

and I’d Rather B Birdin’.

Hello, The wood ducks are beautiful. I love the shots of the ducklings and family. I think the Cormorants are cool, looks at their pretty eyes. Great post and photos. Thank you so much for linking up and sharing your post. Have a happy weekend!

Love the shot of the Cormorant, I wonder if he/she has blue eyes or if it was just the angle of the light.

Happy weekend.

I always enjoy watching animal "families" at play Diane! These ducks remind me of the book, Make Way for Ducklings. Captain Kangaroo read it occasionally when I was a girl and I always loved it. I just loved hearing the Captain read any book!

Diane, You made me laugh. I loved the ducklings. I saw some geese at the mall...oh yes, they just walk around outside like they owned the place. LOL. The baby ones...looked like they had been half plucked. ..I think they were just about to get the adult feathers. Yes, kind of ugly looking. LOL.:) Blessings, xoxo, Susie

Don't just love to see a flock of ducks. It will make your day. I just saw the smallest ones I have ever seen last night. They were mallards. I couldn't get to my camera fast enough to get a close up.

We have a lot of wood ducks around here but also Canada Geese. Now THOSE are some of the cutest babies around . . . and some of the not-very-attractive-and-mean grown ups as well!

We have lots of baby ducks and geese at the lake house and I never get tired of watching them.

The male wood duck is very flashy and I know people set up nest boxes for them as the stumps they nest in are often hard for the wood ducks to find.

I'm totally envious of those who post ONE photo of a wood duck....but you, YOU have the entire family!!! Awesome.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful, tho envious post this week Diane. And if you're in harm's way of the TS Colin....stay safe!!

ps...I agree with Eileen at the top....I like the Cormorants too!!! Their turquoise eyes are pretty...and to see them in their breeding plumage, you wouldn't say they're ugly...the white on the crests and along the neck 'flare' out.

I'm always impressed when you tell the names of the birds you come across. I see many birds around here, and know the names of the common ones, but some of them I've yet to learn about. The baby ducks are precious, aren't they?

OH what fun to see the ducks - I've never seen those before - but I'd love to.

I like the silly old cormorants - they are not waterproof and have to stand with their wings spread to dry out or they would sink in the lake or river. Sometimes we've seen them so waterlogged that they barely have their heads above water. Great photos!!!
