Mexican Petunia Mosaic Monday *UPDATED!

Try to say that 10 times in a row…real fast! lol

*I don’t think I was clear when I said the blooms fall off after only one day. I should have added that they bloom EVERY DAY! Every day we see at least a dozen new blooms. It’s fun to get up in the morning and be surprised with how many new blooms are on these 2 plants. Old blooms fall off…new blooms pop out…every day!

When we redid our landscaping in the Spring, I had my heart set on a big hanging basket of purple petunias. But they are not common here in Florida and the man at the nursery suggested Mexican Petunias.

08Aug1text

So we bought two plants for two corners of our courtyard.

DSCN2269

we have a little sprinkler to water them when it gets dry

We have enjoyed watching them grow AND seeing them bloom.

mexicanpetuniaDSCN2184

The blooms only last ONE DAY and then they fall off.

mDSCN2271

The most we’ve had so far are 18 blooms all at once.

DSCN2287

These blooms dried onto the floor of the courtyard.

Something fun to enjoy every day. We’ve seen bumble bees working them over several times and even a hummingbird once. They attract butterflies too.

I’m joining Cooking and Crafting with J & J HERE

AND Mosaic Monday HERE !

I love Mexican heather. It is a plant that can take the heat and even I cannot kill it.

That's a plant I've never seen. The colour is so pretty - a little like the Canterbury Bells that grow up here. It's good to find a plant that thrives in one's climate.

Diane, Those are pretty and unusual . Hummers love them for their trumpet shape. Hope you get more blooms. Blessings for a great fun week. It's cooler here...so nice. xoxo,Susie

Beautiful color of petunias.... I have never had much luck with Petunias --so I switched to Pansies several years ago for all of their colors... BUT--your Mexican Petunias are beautiful... Love the Mosaic also.

Hugs,
Betsy

I do love petunias, but I've never heard of that one. I wonder if it would work in our hot climate here. I should have the Gardener check it out ! Very pretty.

I have pink and purple petunias in pots, I've never seen one that stands alone like your Mexican ones. What a shame that the flower only last for one day.
Happy Mosaic Monday!

We had Mexican petunias when we lived in Georgia, and I loved watching them bloom. I wonder if they will grow okay in Texas?

Pretty pretty pretty! I know your Mexican petunias by another name, but I can't remember it! Ack! Doesn't matter -- they are pretty! Happy Monday. Have a good week!

These are a gorgeous shade of lavender, sis - great new addition to your garden! I've not heard of them before but if they take the heat of Florida in summer they will do well. Bees are attracted to blue/purple and yellow flowers so it's always nice to give them an extra pollinator plant.

These are a very pretty petunia, Diane. I'm glad they are working for you in your climate and that the birds and bees enjoy them too. :)

Thanks for clearing that up, Dianne. It would be a shame for them to bloom for only one day.

I"ve never tried growing Mexican Petunias but i think they would probably do well here. I love growing Mexican Heather, it blooms till frost. I especially love all blooms that attract butterflies and hummingbirds....
Happy week.

I've seen these at some of the gardens we visit in Ft M -- didn't realize what they were called -- it's very interesting how they grow -- and they are even pretty dried out and on the ground (at least in your pretty photo).

I had a garden full at the olden house we sold. Yes, the blooms do fall and new ones magically appear every day...they are a delight and I'll try hard to remember to plant some in a large pot next yr for our patio....

Diane, I think purple is my favorite color and your flowers are gorgeous! So fresh and feminine. Thank you for sharing them with us.

Your photos are gorgeous. John and I brought a clump of these from the home we just sold to start here at the new house. Caution: they do travel by runners and your one clump will get bigger each season. You can do like us, and dig up and plant some in diff. areas if they crowd out other plants.

In your Florida climate will the Mexican Petunia bloom all year long?

Hello Diane. Here I am. Down here. At the bottom. Love the Mexican petunia, especially the color and I like the tallness. I have never seen them here. A great addition to your corner.

It's so interesting to see the Florida flowers, Diane. I've never heard of the Mexican Petunia before. They're so pretty and a nice color. They look a bit more crinkled than the original petunia. Thanks for sharing. I just wanted to tell you that I learn many things on your blog, my friend.

Those are pretty petunias, with such an upright growth. Have not had luck attracting hummers so far, using only feeders. Will try some flowers this winter.
