Doodle Bug Doodle Bug your house is on fire!

We used to say that little rhyme when I was a girl. We would take a pine needle or tiny stick and go around and around in the doodle bug home and the doodle bug would eventually come to the top. I don’t think we picked it up then though…maybe the boys did! lol

So it was interesting to ‘google search’ this strange insect that we found clinging to the garage screen door (we have screen doors that slide to the side of our garage so that you can leave the garage door open during the day and let the air in, or your car cool off) and find out

it was an Antlion.

And the larva stage is commonly known as a

‘doodle bug’

It’s always fun to see something different and learn something new!

I found lots of info on the Antlion HERE. Doodle bug link HERE.

And doesn’t it look just like something scary up close? Do you think it’s trying to look like a pit bull dog or some fierce animal?

"Doodle Bug, Doodle Bug, fly away home.

Your house is on fire and your kids are all gone."

Have you ever seen an Antlion (or a doodle bug)?

I’m joining Saturday’s critters HERE.

We had a very windy and rainy day yesterday but our weather forecast looks much better now. Thank you all so much for your prayers. I’m still praying for all those being affected by Hurricane Matthew today. Take care and stay safe!

Can't say I've ever seen one of those before. It is interesting to learn more about all of the little creatures we often take for granted. They all seem to serve a purpose. Well, maybe not mosquitoes and flies. :). I think their purpose is just to be nuisances.
I am so happy to learn that you stayed safe in the storm. Matthew is making himself known here now with lots of darkness and rain. I'm having trouble waking up this morning as it looks like it's time to go to bed.

I have never heard of an Antlion or a Doodle Bug let alone seen one. What interesting pictures! I used to say that poem as a child but always heard it called a Ladybug.

Hello, the Antlion is new to me. It is beautiful. The Doodle Bug poem is cute. Great photos! Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Happy Saturday, enjoy your weekend!

I remember teasing the doodle bug larva with a twig when I was a kid. We called them Ant Lions because they ate ants that fell into their sand-trap homes. I didn't know it was written as one word - Antlion. I don't remember seeing the adult, but now I know what they look like I might spot one, as we have plenty of doodle bugs here every Summer.
And we said the poem as Lady-Bug, Lady-Bug, Fly away home.
Have a great week-end!

Very interesting...you got some really great photos of him. That sounds nice to have a screen over your garage door. Have a great weekend! xo Holly

Such an odd and interesting critter. We used to say Lady bug, lady bug instead of doodle bug. It's interesting how in different places of the world things are said differently.

Hello!:) What an interesting insect, which I have never heard of before. I think the Antlion does have a Pit bull kind of look,...at least a dog face, not a lion's, and has the most beautiful lacy wings.
Thanks for the info about this extraordinary insect.:)

I remember that little poem but I've never see one before! I'd also heard of Ant Lions but never seen one. Isn't Google great? So glad to hear you are all okay! The way the weather people tell it everyone was affected and no one had power.

I never heard the entire poem, or don't remember hearing it. As a child I remember calling Doodle Bug, Doodle Bug with my face close to the sand to try and coax out a Doodle bug, also remember gently circling the hole with a stick to send vibrations to coax the bug out. I remember my Mom teaching me that. I don't remember what the doodle bugs looked like, or why I wanted to coax one out, or why I thought this was fun. That was sure the days before video games.

Very interesting seeing the adult bug and fun taking a trip down memory lane.

That's an amazing insect -- I have never in my life heard of it under either name. But we used to say that exact rhyme about ladybugs.
