The White Ibis and the big baby

Okay...it wasn't really a baby.

Look what we saw in the backyard this week! A Mama Ibis and a Juvenile!

We weren't sure until we looked it up in the bird book but it is a young white Ibis (June -July).

It was easy to identify because of the mottled color of the beak.

We're hoping this one will come back again since it came as a young one. It's a pretty rare sighting for us in our backyard.

Come back...come back!!!

And I had some comments about the Crows in my photos. Some people call them Ravens here in Florida because they are so large. But when I looked in the ID book, the White Ibis is 23 - 27 inches and the Crow is 17 - 21 so there's not a huge difference.

This was our excitement for the week! Oh, and the hummingbirds! They finally found our Mexican Petunia so we hung the feeder out for them too. They are out there ALL the time now! (I'll TRY to get a photo soon!)

Do you have feeders at your house? We love our pretty birds!

I must be up really early to be your first comment in a very long time. Love the birds in the back yard. Here we put grape jelly out the for oriels. Now we have a mom bring her daughter in to eat. Great photos of really coll birds.

Big baby is right! LOL! But you can still tell he has that 'baby' look to him/her. So cute with Mom. You live in the middle of a nature preserve! LOL! I think Ravens have a blueish sheen to their feathers but don't quote me....I am no birder! I used to feed the hummingbirds until I heard that they can get sick if you leave it out too long and although I washed the feeder good in between I didn't want the responsibility of worrying about it. The heat here made it 'iffy' about knowing when to change it and I have lots of flowers so I stopped feeding them. Sometimes when we humans intervene we cause more problems and I didn't want to be that problem.

Hello, congrats on the yard visitors. The White Ibis are pretty birds. I loved seeing them all over Florida. That crow just had to photo-bombed your Ibis shot. I love hummers, looking forward to seeing your hummer photos too.

Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Happy Saturday, enjoy your weekend!

Yes, I have feeders. And I'm happy that I get sparrows and chickadees and goldfinches (and purple ones) and the occasional cardinal -- but nothing like this! Spectacular!

Love the great bird photos you take! I have feeders but nothing for the hummingbirds except some flowers. I think I'll plant a butterfly bush next year.

How sweet! Babies are the best no matter what species.

Did I tell you about the Mexican Eagles that live right here by us? There's a pair of them and it's the highlight of our day to spot them. :)

Diane, I love seeing the birds there, because of course we never see them here. LOL...so they are exotic . I am happy you have hummingbirds now. Aren't they so tiny and fun to watch...they will fight for the feeder. Blessings for a great weekend, xoxo, Susie

The Ibis is a grand bird, and the white one is even lovelier. So glad you captured this, Diane. Oh, I can't wait to see the hummingbird photos. To answer your question.....no, I don't have a feeder. I love when I see them at the parks or on a flower. When they come naturally, I think of it as a wonderful gift. : )

How fun . . . these birds are totally new to me. It looks like they have a great beak for forging bugs.

No feeders here, but we sure have white ibis all over. They hunt their bugs in flocks. It is not unusual to see 20 at a time moving through a yard or park land. I am always amazed!

Hello Diane!:) Wow! No wonder you got excited at seeing the White Ibis. The biggest birds I have seen in our garden are the Sparrow hawks, which really aren't very big, and the Jays, but nothing as large as this. I would love to see one in real time. I have feeders Diane, but they only attract small birds, but there again, not the hummers, as we don't see them here. Another sweet exotic bird I would love to see in reality. This is why blogging is so great. I get to see other birds I wouldn't normally see. Perhaps you will show us your captures of your visiting hummers next time!:)

Like human teenagers, juvenile birds may look grown but they still want Mom and Dad in a pinch! :-) When I photographed the flicker feeding its "baby" you sure couldn't tell the difference between juvenile and adult, and the young one would sometimes get his own suet too.

Don't think I've ever seen a juvenile ibis. He'll be more handsome once he gets his white plumage!
I have a new hummingbird feeder, as my previous one was smashed by a hungry something - raccoon, I expect. My other feeder had to be taken down. There is an avian parasitic infection spreading in our area, and everyone was advised to take down feeders for a while. Trichomoniasis affects finches and other small birds. I hope we can put them back up soon. :(

Have a wonderful week with hugs to you and Wendy :)

I think you can call it a teenager :) A cool looking bird and I hope it will come back to you. :)

Diane, will that juvenile turn white when it is older or is it just a different gender than the white one? We do have bird feeders. Our hummingbird feeder broke and I need to get a new one but the seed ones are very popular in our woods (unfortunately by the squirrels too.)

Loved seeing the pictures of the birds in your yard, they are so neat! and oh my gosh!!---great find on that pretty oranges tea cup you found at the thrift store! It's so pretty, I would've grabbed that right up!! I like your library table. We tried one here and it was constantly piled up with junk so I finally abandoned the idea! LOL Yours looks nice! Hope you had a real nice weekend!

I miss those big backyard birds! (They walk around our RV Resort as if they owned it -- they and egrets both.) Have to settle for seeing little birds here in Oregon and those usually at our daughter's. no feeders for me any more -- that is one thing I miss from our former life!
