What to do….what to do!!!
I went into a new thrift store that is run by a local church and it was filled with Christmas items, books, toys, clothing…all of the usual stuff!
But what were the prices? You were to give a reasonable donation!
And you know what? That’s actually a little harder than you might think!
Here’s what I got…..
books of course, old 1920 copies of Shakespeare that had been in the library.
Some ‘nautical’ items…
oh….and ANOTHER BOOK! heehee!
And these cute little Christmas ornies!

Oh, and a bunny I almost forgot!
The books smelled like….WELL…OLD BOOKS! I had just emptied this detergent container
so the books are going to ‘live’ in a box for awhile! (we’ll see if this helps!)

OK! I'm trying to jump on here as quick as I can! heehee! I asked the lady if $10 was a fair amount to give and she seemed pleased! So I donated $10! I want to take some items over there to give, too! I think this is such a great idea! ♥ It will really help those in need! There were lots of baby clothes and items and if someone can pay just what they can afford, I think that's great! ♥
The new thrift store is right next to Foam and Fabrics in Fletcher (that's where I was shopping)! ♥

Oooh...you got some really great things, my friend! You know, I never thought about putting things in an empty soap box...I'm sure it'll help! Great idea! I think $10 was a fair price. Hmmm...you're right, trying to come up with a "fair price" would be more difficult!

Love those ornaments...now if you got those things at an 'antique store' you would of paid a bundle...thrift store..hmmm I guess it would depend on what they are raising money for on how much I would pay?
I enjoyed seeing all the treasures you bought. I would have no idea how much to give, especially in dollars! Great idea to put the books in a detergent box. I'll remember that. Hope it works.

Whatever your donation, I believe you got your money's worth. These are all great vintage things.
Eight dollars. And I counted each and every thing and determined what I would pay. I'm cheap, but you know, I think that this would probably work better than pricing the items. So many people operate under guilt. I found a Dick and Jane book last weekend at the flea...totally a wreck...crayon marks and all...and they were selling it for $7. It stayed right there. Sweet illustrations, though.
Oh, you paid $10. Now I feel a little better. You're almost as ch....thrifty as I am! ☺
Thanks for the book tip. I've put Bounce dryer sheets or cinnamon scented candles in the bookcase behind the books. I like a bit of the old book smell.
One can't have too many books!

It probably depends on what area you live in, but around here the hardcover books go for $1 each. So I figured $11 for books + $3 for nautical items + $1 for the seasonal items = $14. Ten dollars was probably fair since they were donations.
I'm pretty frugal when it comes to resale items because I donate so much to them so I would have said no more than $20. I had a musty old book and filled a folded piece of cheesecloth with coffee and tied it off and slipped both the book and coffee into a ziplock bag for two weeks. Of course the book smelled like coffee but this only lasted a few days and the must odor was gone forever. Just an idea.

I love old books but hate the smell that they sometimes have. Let us know if the detergent box helped! I guessed $12.

I am such a book junkie -- you got some real finds for sure! What about putting some newspaper or fabric softener sheets in the box with the books? Or box of baking soda? Love all of the ornaments too!

I was thinking around 10 -15 so I am averaging out there pretty good.
Love this idea, since honestly, most of the thrift stores here are run for profit, and their prices are wayyyy to high.
Considering that many of their customers are the people they claim to help out, and then they overcharge them, something doesn't sound good to me.
I like this store, and if I was in the area, I would definitely shop there.

Wow!!! Such great finds. Smart idea to let the books sit in the detergent box for awhile.
I once saw a photo of a pile of old books all wrapped in the exact same pastel blue paper...then stacked lying down on a shelf. Quite stunning.

I think $10.00 sounds perfect, and I bet you really were one of the more generous ones. Some people might've only given a couple of dollars! I LOVE the old, green bell ornaments. They remind me SO much of my childhood!

"Down Story Roads" looks so familiar. It may have been a reader I once used in my classroom. I love old books too and have a box of old readers and science books. I'm hoping to find some cube shelves like you showed in your last post. It would be fun to display my old books there. i would have guessed about $12 to $15. I used to enjoy poking around the Sally Ann store but it closed down last year.

I went into a thrift store not long ago & picked up a few things (a pair of shoes and some tops). When I went to pay the lady said no charge. She said all items were free. I tried to donate & they wouldn't take it. I walked out with my items and seriously felt like I had just stolen them. Do you know I never went back. That was just too much for me to handle.

A reasonable donation? That would be SO hard to figure out. Because, depending on who's looking at it, stuff can be worth nothing, or an absolute ton.

I went to a church sale and they had the same thing, make a donation. It was hard but I just added up in my head yard sale prices and paid that. I think $10 was a very good donation! I love giving things to places like this instead of the 'commercial' thrifts. hugs, Linda
Like many of the others I feel a "reasonable" donation depends upon where the money is going, what it is being used for. I still prefer an idea of what they value things at. Maybe you could suggest they post signs "suggesting" donation values, like $1 for t-shirts, $3 for dresses, $1 for books, etc. and they could still allow people to pay what they can.
To get musty smell out of books I put them in a container of either cat litter or flower drying pellets for a week. Sometimes they spend time in a deep freeze as well to kill mold and silverfish.

I wear my hair short and had it cut yesterday. Some woman came in to buy a feather. The stylist said they'd ordered a thousand and would get them Monday. Included in the order are peacock feathers, so come on over to Marion for all your feather needs!
