Let’s learn to Read!

I was so excited to find some old readers at a Thrift store this weekend.

Books2Jan

It was the very first time I had shopped at Crossroads Thrift store!

I found two of the readers right away but the Dick and Jane book, “We Come and Go” was in a different spot and I almost missed it!

I collect children’s books and readers are my favorite finds. (I forgot to put these on my list!)

I’m joining Mary for Mosaic Monday

and Diane for Beautiful Sunday

and Sunny Simple Sunday !

And of course my girlfriend,

Linda for Gratitude Sunday!

I was in the second grade when I really learned to LOVE reading! My teacher, Mrs. Jean would take each of us aside and listen to us read aloud. It was the highlight of the week!

Do you remember when you learned to read?

Those books are SO cute! I love to read, and our daughter has inherited a love for reading as well, praise God! I know most people use their book shelves for displaying treasures and collections...me, I use my book shelves for storing books, lol!

I was a very early reader (and talker!),and haven't stopped since.
Is there any particular type of children's book you collect?

Oh those are soooo cooool! My friend Sandy (521 Lakestreet) and I try to collect those, too. Most of the time they are priced way out of our league ($18-25), but sometimes we get lucky and find one for around $4. Sandy especially loves them, so I'm always on the lookout for them. So what kind of pixies do you look for? The knee huggers or just anything pixish?

Hugs,
Meri

I remember loving the Dick and Jane books when I was first learning to read. Once I learned to read it became my favorite thing to do. I'd love to go thrifting in your area. The stores in my area for the most part have junk instead of treasures.

Reading is truly the best gift my teacher ever gave me-
so excited the moment I realized I was reading on my own without help. It was truly awesome and I haven't stopped since.
have a good week

I vividly remember learning to read with the "Dick and Jane" books. I would follow the words with my finger and I felt so grown up when I taught myself to stop using my finger. I still love to read.

I love those old readers, too. I learned to read when I was 4 going on 5. My father taught me to read and so I have always loved it. I went to tiny little schoolhouse and I was always a "helper"-helping other kids my age learn to read. xo Diana

The readers your found are wonderful! I really enjoyed being read to by my parents when I was a little girl. So when I was finally ready for school I hit the ground running. To this day I love to read.

I love those books, Diane! The illustrations are so beautiful and innocent. I learned to read with Dick and Jane like so many people did. It definitely brings back memories of first grade to see it.

I don't remember actually learning to read, but I clearly remember learning to write numbers in first grade with my favorite teacher Mrs. Parker. She was one of those gentle teachers every little kid loved. Although I don't remember actually learning to read, I remember reading a book much like the ones you shared. Mom has one of her books from her childhood, and I remember the pretty pictures much like the ones in your books.

Hope you have a great week Diane!

Those are great little readers. I don't recall when I started -- in fact, I don't recall much from my childhood at all ... just bits and pieces here and there. Have a great week. Tammy

Oh my gosh I remember both these series soooo well! Do you remember that we first learned there was Dick and Jane and Baby and in a few more days, we learned that her name was Baby Sally! (And the whole class laughed -- I was called Baby Sally for days.... traumatized for life ;>)))))!! (I still always loved reading class though!)

I remember in first grade I learned the word "the". That night I read all of the words "the" in one column of our Springfield newspaper. Very proud when I finished "reading"! :)

I hated reading as a kid, it was hard for me to learn it. Even now, I can't read fast if I want to comprehend it. I like reading now though, especially to pass the time if I'm bored or when I have to wait around. I still have many of my childhood books, just too much nostalgic value to get rid of them.
