A little Nook for Reading

We placed the chair and ottoman facing the window in our bedroom and with a little ‘tweaking’ we managed to get a small bookcase close enough to hold some of my old Poetry books and Bibles.

We turned the ottoman the other way and it makes it look a little more like a chaise now.

I am constantly moving things around on the shelves.

I liked this container I found at the thrift store but not it’s big golden handle so I used ivy to cover it.

And last week I bought this beautiful old Bible, published in the 1890s! What a treasure.

Look at the gold on the edges!

(I didn’t pay much for it…I’m embarrassed to even say!)

I have several old books of poetry that I got at annual library book sales years ago before they started marking them up closer to their value. I think at the first few sales all of the books were the same price and no one cared about poetry. I could stand in that section all day and very few people stopped to browse.

I’m so glad I got them way back then!

I love old books best!

I’m joining Brenda at the Cozy Little House for Tweak it Tuesday.

And Coastal Charm for Nifty Thrifty Tuesday.

Won’t you join us?

What a cozy spot you've created for reading. How simple to turn the hassock for an entirely different look and the bookcase looks so elegant. Great job!

I see how this cozy reading spot could be so comforting - you have special touches and item you love close by - this gives you a relaxed and inspired atmosphere -I would think it would be a great place to meditate too -and come up with great inspirations. Everyone need a place to do that and have peace of mind. We all should be trying to make time for that recharging and healing time in our too-busy lives. -KAT-

I love your little nook. You have the things you look right there. How about a cup of coffee?

Beautiful! I love the way your ottoman is sitting, it invites to snuggle down with a good book. Or an old book, which can be the same thing. I love poetry as well, but I have difficulties reading it in English, so I stay with my German poets.

I love this reading area. Your books are all lovely. Don't you try to imagine who owned the bible before you and what they might have been prayer about or for? I love the history of old books.

I love your old Bible! On my 33rd birthday Grandma gave me her father's Bible which was also from the 1890s. It is one of my most precious treasures!

Love your "chaise!"

Wish I could be sitting in that chair right about now. I love old books, too. I found a small diary from 1861, a woman from New Hampshire owned it. I spent hours and hours transcribing it (deciphering the script and faded lettering then typing it into a bound manuscript). It was so interesting to read about her daily life!

Cheryl K said...

Oops...I meant to say that I found that diary at a used book shop. We have a great one up here in southeastern CT that you would love if you ever saw it!

I haven't had a new Bible in maybe 30 years...don't they still put the gold on the edges of pages? All Bibles used to have that.

About 20 years ago, before we moved to this house, we threw out a couple of boxes of my husband's grandmother's old books. We both regret that. They just smelled so musty then and we were coming to a new house and they had been in storage....regrets, regrets. We just didn't realize they were probably worth something. Now, they would be worth a lot to us, just for sentimental value.

The book section is always the first section I seek out at any thrift store/flea market/yard sale...my favorite find was decades ago..my beloved set of Edgar A. Guest poems...so my favorite poet!!! Love your little reading corner!

What a cozy little spot to read in! it looks so inviting! Love your old books and that Bible looks like my Grandma's that was handed down to me. I like that she wrote notes in it and underlined a lot of verses.
I also love old books!
