Thrift finds and Good Books

I didn’t shop at any thrift store for 2 months. (since before Christmas) I got a little burned out and needed a break. It was nice to save some money and also not to bring more things into my house that I didn’t have room for. lol

But when I finally went a few days ago I found 3  things that I ‘couldn’t live without’!

IMG_1926

My favorite find, a box covered in shells ($1).

IMG_1927

It’s an old wooden cigar box!

IMG_1930

Perfect!

The two books were only 50 cents each.

IMG_1921

I have all of the Jane Austen books but this was a prettier copy than the one I had. It’s RED!

IMG_1924

And here’s my stack of books from the library this week.

IMG_1918

I don’t read every book that I check out from the library. That’s the fun of having a library close by. I can pick up what ‘looks’ good and see how I like them once I’ve read a few pages. I actually read at least 50 pages before I determine if I like it. And sometimes I’m just not in the mood for a certain story.

I read this book last night but decided not to continue. Too sad. I can’t read a sad sad story right now.

IMG_1920

I may try this one next. I’m in the mood for a Western.

IMG_1919

And if you love a beautifully written Southern story about a precious little girl named Starla, read this book! I gave it my highest rating! I wanted to adopt her by the end of the book!

I’m joining Ricki Jill for Literary Friday.

And the Friday 56 HERE .

Friday 56

*Grab a book, any book.*Turn to page 56 or 56% in your eReader

*Find any sentence, (or few, just don't spoil it) that grab you.

My quote is from Whistling Past the Graveyard by Susan Crandall, page 56..

"He smiled so handsome and handed me a bag of popcorn. She smiled in a remembering way. I was so nervous I couldn't even eat it. Took it home and ate a few pieces every day for a whole week.

I decided I would never, ever eat popcorn again.”

Are you reading something good this week?

Love that box-- looks old too. Hey, I have the exact same Bronte book in my Etsy shop! How weird!

I stopped by Ark this week. Do you have Ark? I found a couple of things but left them on the shelf. Then wished whenimhad gotten home that I bought them. Do you do that?

You sure find some cool treasures to add to your collection! I've heard about the book "Whistling Past the Graveyard", but have not read it

I always look forward to your book recommendations. Our thrift stores and estate sales have been slim since winter. Love your shell covered box. I'm so ready to think of warmer temperatures. When the girls left for school this morning it was -15 degrees. Crazy cold!

Love that quote about popcorn. I can just imagine what it would taste like after a week! Not knowing the book, that popcorn could be representing some very treasured memory. Especially when the person would never, ever eat popcorn again. Have a great weekend.Linda@Wetcreek Blog

The Friday 56 is such a great idea! What a fun meme. :-) I'm trying not to covet your book finds. What size are those books? I have a collection of little books that I'll have to post about some day. They were published around 1900 and are so fun! I have Emma and Cranford in that wee format. I think it's called 16vo. ANYway, Diane, so fun to read your post and to know another book lover. I'm reading a few things, among them 'To Marry an English Lord' and 'After you Believe' and 'Greenmantle.'

You probably didn't miss much by not going to the thrifts for two months, there just seems to be nothing there. I hadn't been in a couple of weeks - I guess we are more selective after we have so much in our homes but sometimes we just have to buy a treasure that we NEED!!

Your shell box fits in perfectly!!

What a fun little cigar box! Love it!
Diane-Have you read A Thousand Splendid Suns (same person that wrote Kite Runner). I am about 1/2 through it and it is one of the better books I have read in a long time. Don't want to put it down (it is my "car" book)-lol.

Have a wonderful Friday. I have only been thrifting once since before Christmas. I really need to stop and purge here first. xo Diana

Wow those are some great finds. Those books are gorgeous! I too am a 50 page girl. I used to not be able to put down a book once I started it but I am getting better. I have two right now that I have read over 100 pages in but I have decided that I am done with them. Looking forward to your reviews.

Hugs
Caroline

I have had Whistling Past the Graveyard on my list for awhile. I will move it up since you reminded me. I am reading The goldfinch now. I have a nearby library also and bring home plenty in case one doesn't work out. Also I can buy hard-covers there for 50 cents, which I think is awesome.

I'm re-reading a fav from many years ago. I think I was in my late teens. Christy by Catherine Marshall. Have you read it? It's the story of 19 yr old Christy Huddleston who goes to teach school in the small mountain community of Cutter Gap in the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee. It's quite a story. Loved it way back when and loving it just as much now.

thanks bunches for the book titles to check into! I love reading many different types of books. My book club is reading
"Last Letter from Your Lover" (JoJo Moyes) It is very interesting so far.

Yes, I always read good blogs. Books? Still chugging slowly through my winter book and I do mean slowly. It's cheap therapy to visit the flea markets as John always says. ☺

(I can't read sad right now either. I've got enough "sad" going on.)

Good finds! I haven't bought but a couple of small things since Christmas. The estate sale I went to today was ridiculously priced! Came home with nothing. I have Whistling Past the Graveyard of my library list thanks to you! I'm headed there after work!

Chablis found an estate sale for us to go to today - it felt good to be digging around in someone else's junk. LOL. I found some really cool old boy scout patches and a boy scout snoopy pin. Score!!

I'm reading "Lone Survivor."

I haven't been to one of my favorite resale shops since last autumn-the winter here has been too cold-but I am needing to go again-I love all the treasures we can find-and can't live without. I am also out of a good book to read at the moment too-Happy weekend!

Hi Diane
We're on the way home and I didn't get to a thrift shop while in Florida which I wanted to do. The decorated cigar box you found will be hand for trinkets.
As for reading, it's pretty much just my ereader and I went through 4 books during the month.

Diane, the thrift shops must have been noticing the lack of revenue...lol.

You did well.
