It's not easy to identify the birds we see! There are so many things to take into consideration when you see a bird that is not readily recognized. We see a lot of birds here in Florida and take a lot of photos.
I think it's great fun to come home and get the photos on the computer and start zooming in on them to see if we can figure out what we've seen. There are definitely some 'fly bys' that we are never sure of.
The Sibley Guide to Birds is the best book in my opinion.
We have a lot of books specifically for Florida but so many of the birds we see are migratory and not year round regulars.
So here are a few that we identified this week on a trip to Halpata Tastanaki Preserve, hiking from the Pruitt Trailhead.
I think this is the most beautiful bobwhite I've ever seen. The plumage was so colorful.

And this one was a little trickier. We have seen the Blue Grosbeak in this area all summer but this one wasn't blue!

That's a great picture of the Bobwhite. I'm glad you put it on your Header. I like that old fence he is sitting on too. That is a sweet picture of the ground dove. That's nice that you have a few books to identify the birds. I am familiar with the birds up here, as they are the most common birds, and I've been seeing the dear Robin on my lawn every day.

I love seeing the Bobwhite! And that "blue Grosbeak" is so interesting. I would never have guessed that is what it was. Your Sibley book is good. I have a Peterson Field Guide for Eastern and Central North America Birds. It is good. Also a National Audubon Society Field Guide for North American Birds Eastern region. They are both helpful. I also look online a lot. I haven't seen too many different birds lately. Still a bit early for the migration to start I guess, but we need to keep watching! I have heard bobwhites all my life, but not here in FL, the odd thing is, just 3 days ago I said to bob, listen, thats a Bob White, it was in the back yard somewhere, to dark to see it. maybe like the flamingos that were blown up north, the bobwhites were put here by Idalia

It is such a fun exercise to identify birds with proper names. Bobwhite looks so sophisticated in the plumage.

Beautiful shots! Learning about the birds we see in nature is always satisfying. I use the book "Birds of the Indian Subcontinent" by Carol Inskipp, Richard Grimmett, and Tim Inskipp for reference.
Wow... this book is very educational. Interesting to read. And Yes, it`s difficult to identify the bird ... and the blooms most by myself too.

Hi Friend, yes, we like to ID birds, insects, flowers and plants. We also like to use books instead of APPS to do our research. We have a great library of books on Wisconsin birds, mammals, insects, trees ... you name it. ;-)

your Florida Bobwhite is really adorable - and your photo is very sharp.
I think it's great that you help yourself with books. I got the tip from friends to use Google Lens to help me with animals, plants, etc. (You can also get help with other topics using this app.) I find this practical because it saves me having to buy a lot of books - we don't have any more shelf space anyway ;-) This app stores all the photos on the Internet searches that are similar to my photo and then suggestions are made to me. The better my photo is, the higher the hit rate is. Most of the time I am presented with Wikipedia pages, which is quite instructive.
