Tiny Seashells in a Thimble box

Well, that’s what the lady at the thrift store called this. She said it was a thimble display case.

But the cubbies are a little bigger than I think thimbles would need.

Of course they are perfect for some of my special seashells.

And I recently found this angel top, so I found a bottle (salt shaker) it would fit, filled it with tiny shells and tied pretty ribbon around it to enjoy on my dresser.

Another pretty mermaid sits next to my earrings and other pretties.

I must be missing the seashore.

So do you think that is a thimble display case or do you have other ideas?

I do think that was it's original intention. We used to sell them at the drug/gift store I worked at for thirteen years. My owners mom painted thimbles (and other things) for a hobby and sold them there, also. I don't know why they make the cubbies so large...maybe for TEXAS sized thimbles? lol But, I love YOUR use of the display box!! Very pretty! And I would imagine that you're going to miss that view!!!!

That thimble case "shore" is pretty! I love the way you utilized it to show off your shell collection....far more decorative than a set of "nervous" little thimbles all lined up doing nothing but waiting their turn to be used!

You have made it into a super shell collection box.. i like the idea..
Those kind of boxes one can put all kinds of memorabilia that is small in them.
I would not have thought of shells..but i am thinking now, what a great idea..

happy Wed.

What a lovely and unique idea for displaying shells :) I have some seashells saved up in a glass jar, but I like your idea better :) By the way, your header is wonderful - I love it!

Hugs!

I think it makes a LOVELY display case for your beautiful shells! Love your "re-purposing"!!

It probably was used for thimbles, but I like the way you have used it. It's perfect for shells!

If you are missing the shore it's time for a trip ;)

You know I don't have much room for collecting and displaying...but oh I would love that seashell display case (no idea what it would have really been for, but perfect for what you are doing with it!)

You have got to be right...that is much too large for a thimble display, but it works perfectly for your seashell collection. Demitasse cups? I can't imagine what else might fit there. Salt and pepper shakers? Oh I'll be thinking about this all day. Thanks, Diane!

I agree that the compartments seem kind of big for thimbles but it is perfect for your shells. Love that little mermaid on your dresser, too!

Diane, I don't know what it is, but your seashells look so pretty displayed in it. What a wonderful way to be able to see the beauty of each shell. Great idea. How smart of you to put the angel top on a salt shaker filled with shells, and the mermaid with the shell is so pretty too. Yep, you and I are both beach dreaming this week. laurie

Nope, I think it is a shell display! '-)
Glad you found it because you have beautiful shells to display.

I think it could be a "whatever you want to display case" It works perfectly with your shell collection.

Susie said...

Maybe it's called a thimble case...because it can only hold small things. I have seen thimble cases that each cubbie can actually just hold a thimble. But I like your shell collection in this one. xoxo,Susie

Oh I just love the seashells Diane.
Sadly, I wouldn't attempt such in our island home...I am sure you know now why since my last post!

It does seem a little large, but not being a thimble collector I can't really say. HOWEVER, it is perfect for shells and I love it!! You know how I am about cubbies!! If I see one of these, it will be mine. Thanks for joining TTF this week.

hugs,
Linda

I thought the rack looked like a printer's rack. It could also have been one of those mini-display boxes created in the late 70's/early 80's to display all that country cuteness that was so popular back then. Great finds though! xo Diana
ps. I LOVE New Smyrna Beach!!!

Diane..I've seen lots of thimble display cases, and that is NOT one of them. I am not sure what it was used for but certainly not thimbles. You have utilized it perfectly! It's lovely and looks made for those little shells.
Nope. Not a thimble display case unless those thimbles were awfully big! :) Hugs,
Mona

I think the cubbies are a little too big for it to be a thimble holder...but I sure love it! I have a thing for any old wood pieces that have cubbies. Your seashell collection looks great in yours.

Cindy

I don't care what it was made for , your shells are perfect in it! My mum had one that was made for the figurines that came in Red Rose tea, the shelf was sold by that company, I think I would like this shelf laid flat with glass over it on a table as well, love your mermaids!

I love the idea of setting your angel on a shaker. Very creative.
I have seen thimble displays that look like your cubby box, but I think they had small dowels in each space to keep the thimbles from tumbling out.
It also resembles a type case, where printers would keep the individual type pieces. If it was that, it would have ink in the cubbies.

Alicia@ eco friendly homemaking said...

Oh I think your shells look amazing in that case. You have such a great collection of them.

I'm so jealous! I would love to find a box like that and have been on the lookout for one for years! LOL, if you see it missing off of your wall, you can be rest assured that it is Marty's fault!

Hi Diane, I do think it is a thimble case. Only because my mom had one almost identical that she displayed her thimble collection in. Works great for your wonderful seashell collection. Thanks for sharing it with SYC.
