My ‘tried and true’ biscuit recipe!

I wanted to share some favorite recipes this year. I haven’t decided on a word this year. Maybe ‘share’ would be a good one.

DSCN6004

You may already make the best biscuits in the world. If you are BJ-Sweet Nothings, I know you DO!!! Her cheddar biscuit recipe is HERE ! And she takes better photos, too!

But this is the way I make them. And if you don’t have buttermilk on hand, wait until you can go to the store and buy some. It makes ALL the difference!

Buttermilk Biscuits

2 cups flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/3 cup Crisco

1 cup buttermilk (may need a little more)

2 tablespoons melted butter

Mix dry ingredients together and cut in shortening. Add enough buttermilk to have a wet dough. Roll out on floured surface but don’t ‘overwork’ your dough. Cut out, dab tops with melted butter. Bake at 425 for 12 minutes and then turn on the broiler for about a minute to brown the tops.

Oh, and do you use a tea cup to measure?

DSCN6620

This cup is exactly one level cup to the top.

Enjoy your day and if it’s cold, bake something yummy in the oven!

And now I have to adjust for high altitude! My mom used to tell the story of how my dad's bisquits were always better than hers and she could never figure why until she discovered his secret: cream instead of milk. We laughed over the years each time she or he told the story. He awlays had a smirk when he told the story his way. Yours look delicious and I would be sure to use buttermilk.

Diane, I would love to make these! They look very yummy and nothing like a warm biscuit in the morning. How nice to measure with such a pretty cup.

They look so tasty Diane. Tried making biscuits many years ago and they let's say weren't really edible, lol! Sewing is my thing, but cooking, not so much. "Share" would be a good word for 2015 :)

Share is a good word....it is the first word we learned in our family.LOL You know I have 10 siblings. So everything was shared. :):). I love those biscuits. BJ is always cooking up something good, as is Nellie. I try my best not to cook too much. LOL. Hope you are having a good day. xoxo,Susie

I love biscuits. They are great with stew or casserole, winter staples in the north. Enjoy!

I pinned BJ's great bisquits and I'm so glad you make them and came out yummy! Thanks, now I will, lol! Loved your adorable measuring cup, my mother used to have one like that for measuring her sugar and flour when I was a kid...memories.

Mmmmmmmm those look so good my friend. I think I'm getting my appetite back, finally, but not my ambition so guess I'll have to wait for biscuits. A nice hot biscuit would taste so good right now.

Hey - did you know that you can take regular milk and add a tablespoon of white vinegar to it and let it sit and it will be the same as buttermilk? I use this method all of the time and it's great. Love these biscuits.

We have scones for lunch every Sunday in the winter, we may have to try some of the recipes I've seen on some blogs (including bj's).

Have a nice day.

yep it 's cold. These would be wonderful right now :)

My recipe is practically the same Diane and for years I used Crisco until I decided to change to whole foods and now use butter. Buttermilk is expensive here so I purchased the powder that you add to water and it has worked out pretty good.
Called scones in our house, there's always a handful of currants in the better too. I've made these so many times I could assemble them in my sleep! LOL

These sound pretty yummy - I did a screen shot of the recipe. And I LOVE your measuring cup!! :)

Yummy! I totally agree, Buttermilk is the way to go. Do you ever do the adding lemon juice or vinegar to milk to make buttermilk?

We love biscuits, so we will be trying this for sure. :-)

Nothing better than fresh baked biscuits! Thanks for the recipe Diane!

I adore a good biscuit and these do look tummy. I make my own buttermilk, if I have none, but using a pure lemon juice to sweet milk and it does work too. Just had forgotten yesterday that my recipe called for buttermilk, had none and so I improvised ;)

Mary Howell Cromer said...

Ha ha as it went to post, I saw looks tummy, meant to say looks yummy~

Thank you for the recipe as I don't have a favorite biscuit one. I usually use vinegar added to milk to make my buttermilk but are you saying I should buy real buttermilk? I wish they'd offer it in little containers like whipping cream. Yummo! I can't wait to try these.

Diane, I will be picking up some buttermilk at the grocery store when I shop this week. I do have a weakness for a delicious, warm buttermilk biscuit. Haven't had one in a long time! Sounds so good!xo
