We drove past these…
in front of this cute house.
Then we saw this…
and turned around!
I had missed good photos of the beautiful yellow flowers but we couldn’t believe our eyes when we spotted this pileated woodpecker alongside the road.
And surprisingly enough…
he waited until we turned around and came back for his photo shoot!
It’s the best details of a pileated woodpecker that I’ve ever captured with my camera. (from the car, with traffic coming) lol He finally flew but landed nearby.
I’m joining Saturday’s critters HERE
and I'd Rather B Birdin' .

Hello my friend - and what a fabulous find! I'm so glad you got some good photos of him! I would love to see one of these in person sometime.
What a great photo Diane. And to see him posing as well!!lol!
What an exciting discovery right by the side of the road. He looks like he was hoping you'd take his photo. Maybe he reads your blog :).
Hello Diane,
Thanks for sharing Woody's photos with us. It was kind of him to pose for you
Those yellow flowers are really pretty against the green of the grass.
Hugs,
Arlette
What a great shot of the woodpecker!

Diane, what a great find for a birder! (Did you know they're called 'twitchers' in England?) I'm so glad Woody waited for you to get your shots!
What fun - love the cute house and the flowers - but the woodpecker wins the day. They are so rare around here - though we do see them now and then. More often I hear them in the woods across the street from our house. I'm glad he stayed around so you could get his picture.
Wow! Very neat!
Diane, You are so lucky...what a great shot of the woodpecker. Those are kind of rare aren't they? Hope you get to enjoy some more hikes soon. Blessings, xoxo,Susie
Wow great shots of Woody! Sweet house too!
Great pictures of the woodpecker! And that little field of sunshine blossoms in front of that house??............gorgeous!
I can't believe this--
I just took photos of one of these birds in a tree out my apt window on Thursday--but yours is much much clearer and brighter than mine is!!
Smiles
Oh my, what a wonderful and lucky shot! You did great at capturing the little guy!!!

Nancy
wow, that is such a unique looking bird! And you got a lot of its red head in the second photo. This is a charming house, indeed, with the yellow flowers in front. Loved your pictures today, Diane.

beautiful,, what an assortment of beautiful today!
Beth, that is really an unusual woodpecker, and I've not seen one like it before. That red tuft on it's head, and it even waited for you to take his picture!
Awesome photo! I've never seen one before and it looks bigger than I imagined!

Well he was really wanting his picture taken! Nice capture. Good eyes!
That is a real keeper. I like it very much. Lucky you.
I have seen some amazing critters on the side of the road also. Love this bird!

Great spotting and a really cool photo!
Wonderful shot of the wood pecker. We have lots of them at the lake house for some reason.
Ah yes, I recognize Mr. Pileated Woodpecker, we call him a house wrecker around here! We had one completely destroy a wooden window frame, he thought his reflection was another woodpecker and kept bashing at the frame to drive (himself!) off!
I love the house!! I want the yellow flowers. Woody is so fun,and it is awesome you captured him in a photo.
The little cottage and flowers are gorgeous but I love the woodpecker. Such pretty colors. Have a blessed Sunday.
Hi Diane, you take such great pictures. He waited just for you. I don't know how you did it and with traffic coming, he's beautiful. So worth the drive around.
Sending blessings,
Marlene
Beautiful photos! How nice to have a cooperative little model.
He's definitely Woody!! And he waited for you, that last picture looks just like the old cartoons :)
Diana
I swear, I've told Bud many times, I need a bumper sticker that says I BRAKE FOR BIRDS....and this definitely would've been the time!!!
Wow...I'm speechless.
I appreciate you sharing the link to this post for I'd Rather B Birdin'. Have a super week ahead!!
The road trip surprises! hahaha You never fail to catch one deareast namemate :)
Isn't it exciting when you get a rare photo? And with birds you just do not get a second chance. We don't have this wood pecker here--I don't think. Great photos. And the little house is just cute.
Hi, Congrats on the pics of the pileated woodpecker! And thank you for sharing them! Very nice work.
How very exciting! I've never seen one in the wild! He looks like he just knew he was making your day! The cottage and flowers are so lovely too, but it's WONDERFUL about the woodpecker!
Good shot!!
That's a handsome, big woody wood pecker!
I have never seen a woodpecker like that! Great capture Diane!
Oh how adorable! I can't believe how close he let you get!
Blessings, Joanne

What a piece of luck! I think I heard Woody.... 8+)
Don't you just love those pileated woodpeckers! They're so fun. Great shots, Diane!
That's really impressive photography from a moving car! Such great photos of him. We have two very large woodpeckers that enjoy our oak tree at the Aframe. They are a noisy bunch when they are hammering away.
Nice job capturing the Pileated Woodpecker in the photo.
How amazing to spot him alongside the road. Great shots from the car.
