I'm going to show you several photos. This bird didn't stay still very long. He was fishing and jumping all over the place.
At first we see this....
and then he turns his head for a nice pose.
And then another one.
Now he's off into the vegetation...
and a little harder to see.
One of my best ID shots was a little blurry....
but can you see his striped neck and spotted breast in this one?
He looks like a giraffe!
I wish this one was in better focus!!!
And to make it even harder, I'll show you the one I took of him in flight!
I’m joining Saturday’s critters HERE
and I’d Rather B Birdin’.
These were taken at Blue Run Park in Dunnellon, Florida. If you know what he is, I'll update my post with a positive ID!
All of the comments were wonderful! I got lots of great comments and several people that knew what he is...
A Tricolored Heron
I'll quote Anni from I'd Rather be Birding, "With the blue color and the white belly I'd be 100% sure it's a tri-color heron."
Wikipedia has some good info, HERE.
We are so happy to have seen this beautiful bird. It was a bit smaller than a Great Blue Heron and with the distinct coloring on his neck and breast, we felt sure he was something different or maybe a juvenile. This is the first Tricolored Heron we've been able to photograph and positively id since we've lived in Florida for 11 years! Now we'll know the difference! Thanks so much for the wonderful response!

amazing
Diane, you are the bird expert! You are the one who teaches me what each bird is called. If you identify this one, please post the answer. I have never seen a bird like that one.
Diane, My daughter Kathy would probably be able to help you. I think it looks stork like. LOL. You sure do get to see some amazing birds. Hope you have a great weekend. We had some snow last night...brr. Blessings, xoxo,Susie
Hello Diane, great series on the heron. Maybe a juvenile, I am not sure if it is the Great Blue heron or a Tri-colored. I am leaning toward a juvenile Tri-colored but I could be wrong. Great sighting and photos. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Have a happy weekend!
Great catures. Haven't a clue what the bird is. Have a great weekend :)
I think it is a juvenile Great Blue Heron. But I'm no expert.
:)
I have never seen a bird like this. So interesting. I hope someone can identify it for you -- and us!
Wonderful shots! He is gorgeous!
Hello from Spain: I really like these pics. I had not seen before this bird. Keep in touch
The bird's amazing but you also caught the dragonfly flying in the second photo and that's more amazing!AriadnefromGreece!
It is a Great Blue Heron...
Very interesting! I have no clue but am wondering if the spots and stripes mark it as a "kid?" Let us know if you get a positive i.d.
With the blue color and the white belly I'd be 100% sure it's a tri-color heron. Check it on Google!!
Thanks for sharing at I'd Rather B Birdin' this weekend.
What an amazing series of photos, Diane, and what an interesting bird! Especially in the first photos his neck looks incredibly long. Thank you for sharing!
I'm sure that's a Tri-coloured Heron but I'm judging from several thousand miles away.
He's so pretty! Don't you love how you can ask a question on the internet and some smart person always answers. ;)
PS...Diane, just for fun, if you'd like to view, I have the tri-colored in Breeding Plumage on one of my posts. They are absolutely beautiful...golden back, purple pin feathers and the white crown.

Fabulous photos. Have a great weekend.
Wonderful sighting. Don't you just love all the helpful bloggers out there that help out when ever they can? Anni is an amazing birder.
Interesting bird and great that you got pics of it. Glad fellow bloggers can help identify.
Cool! I like your comparison to a giraffe.
A good selection of shots and that second photo with the almost un-expected visitor on the right ... just amazing, I really like it.
Hope your weekend has been good.
All the best Jan
How wonderful that you get such pretty visitors and you took great photos!
Well I did know he was a heron, at least!
Great shots.
~
Definitely a Heron - I know the juveniles have stripes necks...Don't know about the tri-colored part.
He was a strange looking one. I thought he looked like a heron but certainly didn't know what kind. You have some smart blog readers out there!
That was some skinny neck critter for sure.
Diane,
Amazing photos! Yes it does look like a heron....we have some here but I never seem to have my camera ready....you got some great shots! .....why am I not surprised?
lol....xo

When I got home from Colorado yesterday there was a Blue Heron on our little pond. I have seen one a couple of months ago. I wondered why they were alone every time I see them. My husband said they were divorced. But they are beautiful esp. the one you took pictures of. It didn't look like a heron til the last pictures.
I knew it was a heron, but had no idea what kind he was...very pretty!!
Diane...I saw on your blog roll that you have my blog as being primitive, but it hasn't been that in several years. I've been decorating in a farmhouse for some time now.
hugs,
Cindy
awwww, I can tell you really enjoyed your encounter with this big bird. I see them here at the jersey shore, they are just starting to return from winter break ;)
Fun shots - you are a great detective. I always wish my birds in flight shots were clearer - but I love the idea of capturing the movement of them going by. I've never seen a tri-colored heron - it looks quite similar to our Great Blue Heron - which, as you know - is one of my favorite subjects. Great photos my dear.
He's awesome! Glad you got a positive ID.
I'm feeling pretty good because I thought it was a heron. Glad Anni could help you out!
I was guessing for Tri-colored and I´m glad you got the ID :)
Oh my, you find the most unusual looking birds, Diane. These are great pictures. It looks like a prehistoric dinosaur bird. :) Spectacular, indeed.
