Are you a 'list maker'? I am! And after a hike we enjoy hooking the camera up to the TV to look at our photos and talking about what we've seen. We don't get photos of everything, so I like to make a list in my journal.

Sometimes I know it must sound like I exaggerate when I talk about what we see here in Florida! I can see quite a bit just on a walk around my neighborhood (and to the pond nearby).
So I wanted to share the list I made for Hike # 21. It took place at Blue Run in Dunnellon, FL. We were on the trail for 1 hr 45 min, it was in the 70s and according to my journal, Beautiful!
This trail runs through woods, along a river with some swamps in the low lying areas. We also view a pond along the way.

Northern Parula
Green Heron
2 Limpkins
Mississippi Kite
Swallowtailed Kite
Pileated Woodpecker
Red bellied Woodpecker
Ibis in Flight
Cattle Egrets
Great White Egret
Blue Heron
Comorrant
Hawk
Songbirds
One Alligator BIG!
Turtles
Big Fat Fish jumped out of the water at the bridge
And that's all we could remember! lol
And now what did we NOT SEE:
A mosquito, fly or any kind of gnat
A spider, snake or anything scary
And we don't always see an alligator and when we do, it's off the bridge and a long way away.

Good morning, I usually keep a list during my travels but not my daily walks. I would love to see the Mississippi Kite, I think one was seen in Maryland this week. I miss it. I don't keep a list but I do photograph a lot! I need a zoom lens, that's my next big purchase. Have not seen a green heron around here, now I will be on the lookout, as we do have blue and white herons.
I just picked up a notebook to keep track of all the critters we see at Grimmwood...along with when certain plants blossom etc. I am in search of a good field guide to keep there. Any recommendations Diane?
I envy you, been to Florida a few time, and it never ceases to amaze me how aproachable the wildlife is over there, try to get near anything in the UK and its gone, its so frustrating. Love the Heron and Limpkin photos by thye way.

When I lived in Florida I loved seeing all of the different birds.
One night we were driving in the country and we saw a sand hill crane crossing the road and another on the other side. My husband stopped for it to cross, but I was too amazed to take a picture! Then a bit later, we saw a little doe.

In years past I have seen Pileated Woodpeckers here, but not for a few years now. You got a good photo!

Diane, I knew you had seen many water birds there. I love seeing the photos you post. I have seen many woodpeckers around here...but never the pileated woodpecker. I am wanting to see an eagle around these parts , myself. They are making come backs , but I have yet to see one. Blessings,xoxo, Susie
Oh Diane, you are in an amazing area for nature and wildlife. No wonder you get such fabulous photos -- you have a bounty of subjects from which to choose! We tend to see lots of the same ones -- deep but not wide!
I would never want to come inside if all of those critters were around us. We are so happy because we've spotted a pair of Mexican Eagles or Carracarra right near our new house. :)

Diane, love your critter list except the alligator! The one time I went to Florida (Disney world with my daughter), as we rode on the Disney bus from the airport to the park, we saw a HUGE alligator near people's homes. YIKES!
What a great idea to keep a list of what you see. Sometimes I take photos that are terrible, but I know that I can blow them up on my computer to help me identify what bird I'm looking at. I'm trying to learn the names of birds more specifically. It's a lot of work!

One of my blog friends just saw a blue heron while driving down a road, so this heron reminded me of that. It's nice that you write in a journal sometimes, Diane. That is a lot of critters to see on one hike. The woodpecker is stunning. They always fascinate me. Yours have a pointy head, and ours are rounded. So interesting to see the differences. It's wonderful that you enjoy nature as much as you do. : )

That is amazing at the wildlife you have there! Did you purposely retire to that area for that? Did you research it before you moved there? Just curious as it sounds custom made for all your interests!
