Pizza on the Grill!

Too hot to cook in the oven? Let’s GRILL our pizza!

DSCN5160

I’ve always made pizzas ‘homemade’. My boys can tell you horror funny stories of the heavy whole wheat pizzas I made when they were growing up. (loaded with lots of healthy toppings) But they loved them and I always had to make more than one!

OK! So now fast forward a ‘few’ years! I still make homemade pizzas with my own ‘made up’ recipe. But I have always wanted to try to grill one. I found a recipe in All Recipes magazine but of course I changed it up a bit.

The online recipe is HERE.

I’ll write out a little condensed version of how I made mine.

Crust ingredients…

1 cup warm water

1 package dry yeast

1 pinch sugar

3 to 3 1/2 cups unbleached flour

5 tablespoons olive oil

2 teaspoons light salt

Stir together warm water and yeast, add sugar and let stand a few minutes. Add 3 cups of flour, 1 Tablespoon oil, and the salt. Stir, adding more flour if necessary. Knead on floured surface. Place in oiled bowl to rise. Cover with a damp cloth. Rise about 1 hr. Punch down and let rest while you prepare the toppings.

Heat the grill to medium heat. Cook the toppings you want for your pizza. I cooked sausage, ripe peppers and onion. Leave those on the stove top to stay warm.

I took half of the dough and pressed it onto a well oiled plate (Corelle dinner plate)

When the grill was hot enough, my husband sprayed the rack with Pam and then pushed and prodded the crust off the plate onto the grill. Close the grill lid, cook 3 minutes.

Bring it in and flip it over onto an oiled plate. You are loading your cooked toppings onto the browned side now. I put tomato sauce, oregano, garlic powder and Parmesan cheese on first. Then the meat and veggies. Top with grated cheddar cheese and strips of mozzarella cheese.

Now the doughy side of the crust is down and it slid right off the plate onto the grill. Cook for 5 minutes at medium heat. Check at 3 minutes to make sure it’s not on fire….I mean cooking too quickly. Hubby turned it 90 degrees to cook it evenly.

VOILA!!! Grilled pizza!

I made two but one was enough for our dinner so I froze the other one! It was the closest to a ‘wood fired’ pizza that I’ve ever had!

I don't have a grill but even when I did I have never grilled a pizza. This sounds absolutely wonderful! I want a piece of it so badly and I don't even like pizza that much. I wonder whose grill I can borrow.

My goodness but your pizzas look so appetising, could you send a slice over to Normandy please? I've only ever made pizza dough in my breadmaker and then cooked the pizza in a conventional oven, now I'll have to buy some charcoal and fire up the Weber so I can try your recipe just as soon as the sun starts shining again.
Happy Mosaic Monday!

I LOVE PIZZA - and having grown up in New York and just a half hour from New Haven, we have access to some of the world's best. BUT.. I've never had a grilled pizza - this looks delish!

PS - have you tried a cauliflower crust pizza yet? YUM, and healthy eating too.

I've just finished breakfast, but now I'm ready for lunch at your place! That's a delicious looking pizza. It's too hot to cook here, too, so perhaps I'll try out the grilled pizza one day this week. YUM

YUMMY PIZZA!! I love the fact that you made homemade pizzas with healthy toppings. Those are the best kind. I bet your boys loved them. There was a time when my son was into making pizzas, and I remember him making a delicious one....or three. ; ) Your grilled pizza looks delicious, Diane. And just right for these hot summer days and not wanting to use the oven.

Your pizza sure looks great, Diane. It's been a while since I've made homemade pizza. Cooking on the grill sounds wonderful. I like that you have one in the freezer for later--it would be calling my name. ♥

Your pizza looks so tasty, Diane! I love grilled pizza, but I have to really watch mine closely so that it doesn't get charred. I like making my own dough, too, and have two in the freezer ready to go.

I have eaten all kinds of pizza in my life but never one on the grill. I'll have to give that a try.

Well girlfriend I pretty well near did spit sweet tea all over I was laughing so hard when I read your comment from today!! ha ha ha ha LOL I didn't know if you'd get a giggle out of me and my "froggie went a courtin" song or not.......ha ha LOL. You sure got me back though (with your comment)---I was imagining you and I, arm in arm, both in big straw garden hats, entering into the ancient churchyard, and you are singing "Amazing Grace" and both our hubbies are following along behind us, both with our cameras, of course--they have been very nicely asked to "make pictures". They know we want pictures to remember this fun time and they also know those pictures will probably end up on "the blogs". ha ha ha ha LOL

I have to say that I've never tried to grill pizza but now that I see yours, I may just have to...it looks absolutely delicious! Thanks for the recipe and instructions! Hugs!

My, oh my, Diane! Your pizza looks so tempting! I bet it smelled good as it "baked" on the grill. Thank you for including your recipe!!

Sallie (FullTime-Life) said...

how totally fabulous is that!! We don't even own a grill any more, because we don't eat hamburgers any more or hot dogs and it was just too much trouble for everything else. But this sounds enough to change my mind!!!

Silver in AZ said...

we are so lazy! We buy the Boboli pizza crusts that all you have to do is put on the toppings and bake. Voila! Done!

Rick makes great pizza. I've got to talk him into doing it on the grill sometime!
