I drove into the Pruitt Trailhead at Halpata Tastanaki Preserve last Sunday morning and this is the FIRST thing I saw.
The Sandhill Crane Family
I parked under a shade tree, grabbed my camera and went all around following this happy family around.
Luckily they were taking a leisurely Sunday stroll and I was able to keep up with them!
I noticed that one of them was MUCH bigger than the others!
But I really could not tell that one of them was a young one until I got home and looked at my photos.
He was a paler color overall and the red on his head was more of a peachy color.
HEY wait up everybody!
I should have know by his behavior! He kept falling behind!
It was a beautiful morning and even though it was hot I managed to get a short hike in.
We are hotter and dryer this week so I don’t know if I’ll be able to get out in the next few days. I need to start another craft project! lol

I sure enjoyed the hike with the cranes this morning....they are fascinating to me. Love the one picture of the one running to catch up! Have a nice Saturday.
We had a cormorant on our pond yesterday . He kept us entertained diving and flying around.my sister got some pictures of him.

I also like sandhills, I love the call they make.
Seeing all your wonderful pictures and those walking trails makes me want to move to Florida. Then I remember the humidity, which I couldn't handle when I lived in Princeton, NJ, so I guess I'm better off here, smoky skies and all. Love all this though!

It can't be easy to work for hospice care, good for you.
I just saw four cranes on my street yesterday although usually by now the kids have gone their own way, with maybe a third crane hanging out with mom and pop now and again. As much as I see them they are a fun combination of weird and elegant to still make me smile.
Sandhill Cranes are really interesting to observe. You took some great photos! I'm happy for your new job and hope you are able to share some with us. I know you are a blessing to many!

a GREAT series of images and i enjoyed your commentary!! it is good to have a few craft projects to work on in this super hot weather. we are hot and humid here in new jersey and now we are getting rain. i always have inside things i can work on, and sometimes welcome a day indoors in the a/c!!! have a happy sunday!!
What great photos. I had no idea cranes were so large. Good for you getting out to take a walk. It's way too hot for that here. Even the kids are not outside playing.

Now I could manage that. Sitting in the car and watching a family of cranes. I find that a car is simply the best hide for photographing birds. And with a handy window on which to rest the lens.
You have sandhill cranes? In August? Lucky you...they haven't arrived here yet.

Taking a morning walk! Neat photos!
It is always such fun to see the whole family out together! It’s hot here in inland Oregon too, if that makes you feel better! We are at the Coast camping tho ...and it is much cooler!

Oh what a glorious day and the cranes - my favorite. One of the best things about our trip to Wisconsin a few years ago for Don's 50th high school reunion was seeing hundreds of sandhill cranes - not all at once - but they seemed to be everywhere.
I'm back to blogging now, after a month and a half off - hope to catch up on my favorites. I spent the last week and a half being very ill - but I think I'm almost human again - a visit from our grandson certainly helped cheery me up.
