We were so excited to find a nice flock of Florida Scrub-Jays on the back loop at the Halpata Tastanaki Preserve near the Savannah.
In fact I was so excited that I went back again the very next day to see if they were still there.
And they were!
The Florida Scrub-Jay is the only bird species that lives exclusively in Florida.
And it's on the federal endangered species list.
We were even more excited when we saw that at least one of the birds was banded.
(this one was showing off!)
We didn't notice the bands on his legs until we came home and looked at our photos.
When we load our photos onto my computer, we hook it up to the big screen TV and look at the photos there. We can really zoom in and see everything up close.
The Scrub-Jays were flying back and forth across the trail so we just stood real still and watched them.
The Blazing Star is in full bloom so I'll include it here. The Gulf Fritillary butterfly loves it!

I absolutely love the photos of the scrub jay.
i have only seen green jays on Hootin annies blog and now here, haven't seen one here. they are so beautiful and i like them better than our regular loud blue jays.the blazing star is gorgeous

You didn't say if you managed to read the Jay ring number. Sometimes even if you only have a partial number it may be possible to trace an individual. On the other hand I know there is a Florida scheme to mark as many as possible so it may not have travelled far.

Hello Diane, Such beautiful birds, and beautiful captures. I have never heard of the Florida Scrub Jays,and that these birds only live in Florida is amazing. The Gulf Fritillary on the flowers is a lovely picture,... glad you included it.
Diane those Warblers do flit alright. I stood there for ages trying to take a photo, but they flitted all over the tree. I almost gave up!

Oh you were so blessed to be able to get such good photos of the Scrub Jay. They are an elusive bird and hard to find...you have to be in just the right habitat to see them and then to get them to stay put long enough for pictures is really special! Thank you so much for sharing these with us. And I love the Blazing Star...ours are already finished blooming here. There were a lot more this year than there were last year, so that was nice to see. I love the purple and gold wildflowers of October and November here in our woods. Yes, it's so nice to see and appreciate the real beauty of Florida!! Nothing artificial! That's MY Florida too!
If I were coming to Florida, and i was told that I could only see one bird, Florida Scrub Jay would be my immediate choice. I have so many wonderful memories of this bird.

Interesting jay. We don't have those in Virginia.
The blue jays are such a wonderful bird. Such a beauty with bright blue feathers. But their call is LOUD, and I hear them sometimes in my front yard. They have a distinctive call. And it can be quite screeching. But they sure are pretty, aren't they? So glad you saw a couple of them on your hike.
