Meet the Crane family!

We see Sandhill Cranes at the trailhead of the Florida Trails (Pruitt trailhead) often.

We see them there year round. But we've never seen a juvenile this young. We see small Sandhill Cranes that are the same coloring as the parents, but this one was blond and fuzzy!

It's not newborn because it's too big for newborn, but it's just a few months old.

They stay with the parents for around 10 months before they go out into the big world on their own. I'm not sure when they lose the blond fuzzy color though.

We parked at the trailhead of the Florida Trails and hiked that trail in search of the Passionflower. But it's not in bloom yet and was impossible to find. Once it blooms it will be easy.

Cranes are just amazing, aren't they? We have them here along the Bay for the summer. I miss being able to look out my window and seeing them along the shoreline. I love how much you love all your walks and wildlife experiences. xo Diana

Lovely to see a baby crane, I've never see a picture of one before. It's like I'm hoping my neighbor's llama is pregnant -- I've never seen a baby llama either.

Have a nice weekend, enjoy your hikes, I imagine you'll take a few.

Wonderful morning in nature!

Our Florida sub-species of the Sandhill Crane is fascinating to observe! Very nice images of this family. My understanding is the young colts will gradually gain their adult plumage at around five months and remain with their parents for about 8-10 months. (I am NOT an expert, just field experience, so someone may provide better information.)

Thank you, Diane, for sharing more of west Florida's beauty!

I love the cranes! The adults have a red spot on their head? The juvenile is so cute with it's "fluff" still hanging on. Amazing creatures. I think I've seen titmouses here. You had a real photo shoot with the Sandhill Cranes, Egret and Ibis. It's funny how the white ibis juvenile is not white...lol! Great day for you on the trail!

Are you sure you weren't in MY yard? That looks just like my current Sand Hill Crane family. We have been enjoying them here every day for the past month or so, watching the "Colt" growing by leaps and bounds every day! Ours looks almost exactly like that one now. They are such fun to watch. Oh, I love all the wildflowers and birds and such. God's gifts to us to enjoy!! Thank you for sharing them with us!

I love seeing the Sandhill Crane families! The colts are so cute. They lose their fuzz pretty fast, I think. I always love going on hikes with you!! Love the photos! xo

Sandhill cranes in Michigan are similar in color, though I understand that some of the color is a result of the cranes putting mud on their feathers.

However did you do that photo of the silhouette crane in front walking and the other two in light? Is that a brilliant manipulation or an even more brilliant stroke of luck. It's absolutely stunning.

Hi, Diane! Thanks for sharing another Florida trail that some day, whether this life or another, I want to walk. You’ve also given me birds to study, thank you very much. I’ve been practicing at drawing birds’ legs. My brain has a difficult time drawing their knees. lol.

I see Passion Flowers at our Manatee Park, but I didn't think they were native! Wow, wonderful, I hope you see them soon. But what a wonderful hike you had , really the wildflowers are amazing and as always your birds. (And always, I am a teeny bit envious of not only your birds but also your photography, especially the flight shot which is fabulous.

I love that titmouse photo. How special to find a young sandhill crane. I've never seen one before. Hard to believe it will eventually look as beautiful as its parents.

The fleabane look like tiny wee daisies. I love that picture of the Great White Egret. It looks so still just sitting there in the tree. And the branches on the trees are all twisty and pretty. The fields of wildflowers are lovely this time of year.

Happy Mother's Day Diane.
