I've always loved maps. I'm not the best at following them but they have always intrigued me.
And now they are a great tool for planning a hike!
A few years ago a sweet couple that volunteered for the Cross Florida Greenway gave me a set of maps. We used to see them on the ATV with the blower attachment that cleaned off the paved trail. And then the last time I saw her, she told me her beloved Kenny had passed away.
Now we can walk past the bench dedicated to Kenny with fond memories.
We hike from several different trailheads when we hike what I usually call the 'Florida Trails'.
It was a beautiful sunny afternoon when we started our hike at the 49th Ave Trailhead.
And it was too nice to stay on the pavement so off into the woods we went.
Lots of neat things to see like this Fence Lizard.
And the wild plum is blooming all through the forest!
Lots of green year round here.
Lots of palmetto palm and ferns in this area!
And a view from the trail.
Several people have poured over these maps to look at the trails close by but I can't be talked out of them!
I love pouring over maps. Do you?

We too still use paper maps. Barb has an atlas that she highlights our travels on throughout the year. Same goes for our hiking and ATV adventures back home.
Love seeing pictures of your area, it is so different than we are used to seeing in person.

i LOVE the look of a map, but could not read a regular map to save my life. these maps, of trails, maybe, but i really LOVE GPS when driving!! i have used old maps as wrapping paper for gifts, i really like that look and i am recycling which i love!!

I agree that maps are very interesting! I don't have the best sense of direction so I always look at a map before driving somewhere new or taking a hike somewhere new. Your fiernd's memorial bench is very nice--may he rest in peace.

Oh my goodness, Diane, I have always loved maps, too!!! They fascinate me. You and your hubby are so lucky to be able to enjoy hiking together. I sure miss that with my late beloved hubby.

I LOVE maps!! My mom taught me how to read them when I was a kid and the best part about traveling is looking at the map and figuring out my route. Love it!!
That fence lizard certainly does blend into his surroundings! I love maps, too, and when we took up boating, sea charts, as well. I love the grander glimpse of the landscape than what a GPS can give. And oh the possibilities of maps - lots of inspiration for you.

We never use maps when we go for a walk, my husband has an app on his phone that tells us exactly how to walk.
In the Netherlands there are walking routes marked everywhere with different colored posts, you could never get lost.

Love your trails!! Around here we have beautiful trails also, but there are many hills, many rock ledges, a lot of challenge! Sometimes you just want a nice level trail through the woods. Pine forests among my favorite, and I know you have a lot of pine down there.
I too love maps, but I suspect that many young people hardly, if ever, look at one.
I love maps too. And I so enjoy learning about the real Florida from your stories and photographs.
I would have to say that pouring over maps is a highly unlikely activity for me. I can see why it would be enjoyable for one who likes to get out and about.
I remember when we had nothing but a paper map! Marty still likes to use a paper map. I've never been able to figure one out! LOL! However, even with all the new technology we have with our phones I have learned that they are not always correct in directions. LOL! Hugs and blessings, Cindy

wow.. how great that lizard blends in!! I love your photos and being able to see what you see on your walks. I always found maps intriguing too and marveled at how they were made in times past.

I am rubbish at reading maps! Bill loves them, so that is why we never got lost in all the years we traveled (well before GPS). And he will take one look at a trail map when we get to a park and then remember exactly where we're going . If I'm by myself I just pick somebody to follow LOL! Really I would never go alone on a new trail walk. Last week we went to a preserve that had no trail markings at all and overgrown trails. That was a surprise, but we had fun finding our way out and back to the part that was "tamed."

Those maps are really nice to have I've never been good at reading them either. That is a thoughtful bench in Kenny's name right there on the trail. That's a special bench for sure. It would be nice to sit there for awhile and rest with the shade that the roof provides.
