A Quick trip to the Pruitt Trailhead!

Even a short hike can reap great results!

When we drove in, the first bird I saw was perched on an old dead snag. So I rolled the window down and took a photo.

Mississippi Kite

We see Kites all through the summer months here in Florida.

Swallow-tailed Kite

Queen Butterfly

The stars of this little outing were the butterflies!

The Queen butterfly was exquisite!

And some of them were a duller brownish color.

The Gulf Fritillary is always a pretty orange and common in North Central Florida.

And here are the maps for this little outing!

I love these unknown roads! I feel right at home here!

Happy September everyone!

I am getting this post done early before Hurricane Idalia comes through. I'll update it to let everyone know how we fared. Hopefully it will just be a rain event for our area and we won't have any damage. I'm keeping everyone in the path of the storm in my prayers.

Update : We weathered the storm without any damage. You don't have to drive far to see a lot of damage though. We live about 30 miles, as the crow flies from Cedar Key. But we are fine and have clear skies and hot temps again! WHEW!

I’m joining Saturday’s critters HERE

  and Mosaic Monday HERE !

Beautiful photos of the butterflies and the kite, etc. And yes, we were all blessed that Idalia bypassed us, but we are very sorry to see all the destruction along the Gulf Coast, esp. Cedar Key and Steinhatchee, etc. It will take a long time to recover. Praying we don't get any more hurricanes this season. Enjoy your Labor Day weekend, and try to stay cool.

I see Kites at my work often. They are amazing to watch. The butterflies are beautiful! Our new Bonnet Springs Park has a butterfly house. I need to get over there and explore it. I love when they land on you! Glad you had no damage. We did get lucky.

Mississippi Kites are wonderful, graceful birds. About twenty years ago, I was visiting friends in a small town in Kansas, and we all went to see one of their granddaughters playing in a local baseball game. While others watched her drive in the winning run, I was happily engrossed with Mississippi Kites hawking for insects. Much better than baseball!

How fabulous that you didn’t suffer any damage from the incredibly damaging storm! It’s astonishing how violent they are — and how localized!

I'm glad that the storm didn't hit you directly.
It is always a thrill to spot butterflies of any type. Great shots of them.

Those little butterflies are beautiful. But, you know me. The kites would be the stars of my trip, especially if I managed to photograph them like you did. Enjoy your week Diane.

your first image is really special. i enjoy taking pictures right from the car. i can rest my elbows on the door (window open) and i get a super steady shot!!

i am so happy you are seeing so many butterflies, i have not seen many at all. all season i only had two caterpillars, both of which i released as butterflies. only 2, i usually have about 50. i do have 11 caterpillars all of a sudden, i think they will over winter in chrysalis form and open in spring!! my butterfly friends are having the same experience!!

glad you are ok, i was thinking about you not knowing how close you were to the storm!!!

It is so good to have weathered the storm!! Your hike produced many lovely photos. I love butterflies, and see one fluttering past my kitchen window every now and then. The birthday cake Ron brought me was yummy! Thank you! It will be cooling off soon, so will be more pleasant to hike. Have fun! Love, Aunt Helen

Most importantly, it's very good to hear you made it through Idalie unscathed.

"Unknown Road" - my very favorite.

We seldom see Mississippi Kites locally so that would be a treat for me. The Swallow-tailed Kites have been fun to watch all summer and have now departed for Argentina. Like you, we are now seeing tons of flowers and butterflies. A great way to begin a new month!

Enjoy your week, Diane. Thank you for brightening our day.

I'm so glad y'all missed the brunt of that storm. Here we worry about tornados, but hurricanes are much, much worse. Your butterflys are beautiful. I haven't seen many here- even the bugs have been mostly absent..it's strange.
