The Wood Stork at Manatee Springs State Park

It's always good to learn to identify the birds you see. I find it a challenge but over the years, I've learned a few!

I walked on the boardwalk at Manatee Springs State Park every day that we camped there.

Sometimes I went more than once a day.

The lighting can be so different and also bird sightings.

I said 'hello' to a couple that I had seen a few times and I noticed his camera with a zoom lens.

One late afternoon, I was on my way back down the boardwalk and saw that he was zoomed in on something in the swamp.

So I stopped to look and I said, "Even living here in Florida, it's still a thrill to get to see a Wood Stork."

And they both looked at me with wide eyes and she said, "Is THAT what that is? We didn't know what that bird was."

So it felt good to actually share that with them. And when he gets home from traveling he will have a bird ID for his photos! It made me smile. I walked on, and when I looked back, he was still taking photos!

This Great White Egret was very beautiful too.

The birds don't feel threatened by people walking on the boardwalk.

So they pose and preen.

The Suwannee River in all of it's glory!

And my favorite Wood Stork photo!

Do you see his loose feather?

I’m joining Saturday’s critters HERE

The Wood Stork is amazing! I like learning the names of birds I see, too. On our recent Mexico trip I saw a ton of them that I had to look up later. But I did see a Green Heron, which I recognized from your blog.

your photos bring back the memory of the day I first saw a wood stork, he and his bride were standing just like your last photo, on on leg, in a creek at the park were we take Beau to walk... I said to Diane, the bird lady, what is that bird? She answered its a stork, I said not a stork that delivers babies. she laughed and said its a wood stork... they are fascinating. same thing when I saw my first ever pink spoon bill, same park... wow. today while driving home from Walmart, 3 Ibis were flying in perfect sync, a 3 bird Y and their wings were moving like they were connected, flying into the sunrise

Hello Diane :)
Marvelous captures of the Great White Egret and the Wood Stork.Yes, it's a good feeling when someone asks you what a bird or other creature is called, and you are able to identify it for them. This once happened to me when a young couple and I both saw a Hummingbird Hawk Moth as we were leaving a restaurant, and the lady asked me what it was, I gladly helped by telling her the name, and she went away wiser and happier for having seen it-
All the best

Your kind of white on a winter day is so different than mine! So nice you got to share in the joy when the couple experienced seeing a "lifer"!

Hi, this is a fun post. Sharing your knowledge with others. That is so great my dear friend.
I am not sure what to think about the wood stork, do I think he is handsome or ugly. Hee Hee. ;-)

I've only seen a couple of Wood Storks. All of my sightings have been in Florida. Not the prettiest birds in the world, but very interesting.

The wood stork is so unusual! I would love to spot him someday. Another nice reason to visit Florida.

I wish that I took more time to learn the names of birds in Florida. A few. years ago I spotted a group of birds in a swampy area. I took a photo and did some research. They were Wood Storks! Your photos are wonderful and the scenery of the area is magnificent .
