My hubby and I drove to Cape Canaveral National Seashore one day last week and were privileged to see many Sea Turtle nests up and down the beach!
You can see the broken shells next to this nest and know that it has been destroyed by some animal.

Turtle Trivia- Florida beaches are home to 80% of Loggerhead turtles in the U.S.
- Turtles can migrate thousands of miles, but usually return to lay their eggs on the same beach where they hatched
- Sea turtles have existed for over one hundred million years
- It can take 15 - 50 years before a sea turtle is capable of reproducing
- Scientists estimate that only 1 in 1000 to 10,000 babies will survive to adulthood
- Sea turtles live their entire life in the ocean. The only time they comes ashore is when the female lays her eggs.
- Sea turtles are reptiles. They breathe air, and can hold their breath for long periods of time.
- When its time to sleep, a loggerhead will wedge under a rock close to the shore, or take a snooze while floating on the surface of deep water
- Hatchlings weigh less than one ounce and are only two inches long. Adults can grow over 3 feet long and weigh 200 to 300 pounds!
- The nest temperature during incubation determines a sea turtle's sex. Boys like it cool - Girls like it hot.
- Sea turtles have great underwater vision, but are nearsighted out of the water.
- Although sea turtles do not have external ears, they are capable of hearing low frequency sounds and vibrations
- Sea turtles use their strong jaws to crush a diet of crabs, shrimp, mussels, and jelly fish.

Last year we visited the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island.
We were looking through the museum part of the building when a lady came to tell us they would be working with a large sea turtle to teach him how to dive for food.
When they are injured or sick, sometimes they lose their food gathering skills.
Being in the rehabilitation area was the highlight of the day!
There were about 20 turtles in the center and you can track Talbot now. Click HERE to follow him in the ocean near Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Hi,
Isn't this exciting. There are many sea turtle nests on St. George Island and this is a bit early. Are you familiar with STAR (Sea Turtles At Risk)? They have volunteers on the island to assist with the hatchlings.
The down side is that all these early nests will hatch during the peak tourist season. I am hoping there will be a heavy nesting at the State Park where people can't leave beach furniture, and the park is only open from sunrise to sunset.

OMG! When we were on South Padre Island last week, we went to the Sea Turtle Rescue Center there. We got to see and learn about them. They had many injured turtles, and also many babies. So cute!
They pick up all of the eggs on the beach and bring them back to hatch them, then release. People drive on the beach there, so this way more babies survive. Thanks for all your nature pictures!

I love sea turtles! We saw several that were being rehabilitated at the Mote Aquarium a while back. This past weekend hubby found a fresh sea turtle nest on the beach! Wonderful post! You are really in your element at the beach! Love your pictures Diane!

I see that you live in FL and NC...that's what most of my siblings do...they're in Mt Dora and Tampa...and Cashiers, Nations Creek, and Big Canoe (GA) As you can gather from my post...my own family prefers the Atlantic coast...

Thanks for an enjoyable post; very interesting and loved the photos. I saved a kitten today; does that count? S/he was a foundling, perhaps four weeks old and abandoned by, probably, a too young mother. I'm trying to get the cats spayed and neutered but it's difficult. Just about the time I think I'm done, more show up!
Monkee is a sweet little thing; just hope I can save him. Or her. S/he's too young to tell yet.

What an interesting post, I had no idea there was a World Ocean Day until I read this.
Loved reading all the information on the sea turtles, as I love the ocean I really enjoyed all the facts. I especially loved reading about their vision!

I never seen a sea turtles nest or one on the beach either. They seem like such tough anomals but they really are vaunerable to predetors. the photos were wonderful and all the info was excellenet thanks for sharing. :) Debb
