Believe me…you do not want to hear me try to speak French! Most people have trouble understanding my Serious Southern Drawl…in English! heehee! But it’s funny that I do remember my colors, numbers and some of the songs I learned in high school French!
So it was fun to find this old book, published in 1898 at the Thrift Store this week.
And then I remembered some children’s books that I bought a couple of years ago.
Aren’t they charming?
Fables of the Fountain has beautiful stories and illustrations.
I love this illustration best.
I’m joining Beautiful Sunday,
and Amaze me Monday!
Do you speak another language?
Maybe you could write one sentence in the comment for me to translate!
(something nice! heehee)

Oh j'adore trouver des vieux livres!
Lucky you- these are charming-
I studied French - (my school actually started it in Kindergarden) and some Italian in college to study abroad but as that was about 100 years ago I'm completely rusty at both - lol I really wish I had kept it up better :( - small disclaimer - I double checked my phrase with google translate- lol
Ciao, come stai?
What wonderful books you have found Diane!
that looks like a very cool book!
Jeg kan godt lide at læse børnebøger - although I understand Danish much better than I speak it!...and I never write it, so I had help from The Great Dane.
"J'aime lire des livres" My high school French is so rusty but soon I'll be trying to say a few phrases! Love the books in French!
une étreinte

Oh! Les Fables de La Fontaine! Les souvenirs abondent...
Diane, this 1898 French course sounds interesting! Hang on to it!
Never mind the accent, Dear...Mine is decades old and gives me away every time!
Blessings on this lovely Sunday,
What wonderful finds! I speak French and a tiny bit of Spanish. I will have to keep my eye out for some vintage French books, my daughter teaches both French and Spanish and would love having books like these to use with her young students.

As ilustracoes de livros infantis sao tao bonitinho. Eu amo tartaruginhas.
That looks funny the way it is written. There should be several accent marks, but I don't know how to do that on the keyboard. (I speak very rusty Portuguese. It has been years since I have used it.)
Wie geht es Ihnen? I took German in high school. Doubt I would get by in Germany! Very nice books
Qui qui...un peut....love from me Ria...x!
wow such sweet books :)
hugs x
We study English, French and German in HIghschool and of course Dutch our native language.
Je parle le Francais un petite peu.
Hope I got that right, lol
Wonderful collection of books.
It's amazing to me how much Spanish I remembered from high school, enough with some fine tuning to be able to communicate with my maternity patients in the hospital. I guess our minds were young then and able to absorb and remember more. Don't you remember names from your childhood better than names today?
Bonjour! That's about all I remember of the few French words I ever learned. Your books are very nice and look wonderfully illustrated! I love seeing the artwork in children's books.
¡Hablar otros idiomas rompe las barreras!
As I live in Spain I have to speak Spanish and I imagine in Florida there are numerous people who speak it too. I also speak Valenciano which is the regional language.
As an English teacher I often use children's books with Adult beginners especially for pronunciation.
I would like to speak many more languages!
Giveaway now open!
keep well
Amanda :-)
Nice collection of books! The illustrations are cute! I never learned French, wish I did! Have a happy week ahead!
Hola,como estas,amiga?
Hello,how are you,friend?
My daughter is learning sign language .She is bilingual. My boy and I enjoy japanese language. We love japanese movies like Ponyo.
Hasta la vista,baby...
Have a hermoso dia !!
Es un encantador pequeño libro.
The books are so cute. I wanted to take french when I was in school, but I had to take latin for college. Maybe one of these days I could learn it. Never too late they say.
Oui, je parle un peu Francais. I do remember this from high school! Colors, numbers, too :) Many years ago when visiting my cousin in Spain, her car broke down and French tourists helped us. Knowing basic French was so helpful, even in Spain! :)

Cute books Diane. You opened a can of worms here, fun to read all the different languages.
I only have high school French and what I remember is not that noteworthy.
When our twin granddaughters were filling in forms for school one year, a question asked if they spoke another language. Oh my, one of them wrote down pig-latin.
We still kid her about it to this day.
Judith
Hola! Charming books! Love the illustrations! I SHOULD be able to write something in Spanish after 6 years of it in school. But that was way too many years ago...adios!
Lol
I love old French readers. What a treasure.
Sherry
Bonjour. Great pictures books. I come from a bilingual country, French and English. Cannot speak French very well.
I do not. But I have people who comment on my blog who speak Swedish, French, Japanese, German and Polish (maybe more) but they usually comment in English, even if I have to translate their blogs when I read them. I am so in awe of their bilinigual ability and I wish I did know at least one other language! It's great fun to read about other cultures and that's one of the things I love about blogging.
Another thing I love is seeing your beautiful pictures ... you find such beautiful things ...thanks for sharing your wonderful collections!
Loved this post and adore those books! Sadly I never learned another language. I always wanted to learn Latin, Italian and French but most days I have enough trouble with English.. LOL
Robyn
Those are sweet books...perhaps one could pick up some French from starting at the beginning again. No, I really dont speak any other languages, though I am taking German lessons via DuoLingo. They are free. You could take up French.
I don;t but I wish I could.
Bonjour Diane,
Just got back from our trip to PA. Your post made me laugh....I can't remember most days what I had for breakfast but I still can recite the poems we had to memorize in French class.
xo

Sew what!
ps vous etes dans la lune!!! (like me!)
Was für schöne Bücher!!! Of course I speak German since it is my native language. I also speak French and refresh it currently since my daughter learns it in high school. Over the summer we spole a little bit of French every day just to practice. I also learned Chinese - I have a master's degree in Chinese studies - but this is so long ago and when you don't practice it it's so easy to forget.
These are just so cute!! Thanks so much for stopping by and for your kind comment!!
Hugs,
Debbie
A fun post! Love your thrift store book. I took Spanish for years in high school. I still remember quite a bit but when I hear the language fluently, I don't understand a thing!
Mildred
My high school Spanish was a zillion years ago. Very little remains in my brain. It's been fun watching Emma soak up her French classes.
What a great find!! I love vintage books!!
Although I took quite a number of years of Spanish, it was never my forte.
Lovely to have have you at Seasonal Sundays.
- The Tablescaper
I wish I could find some of these for Marley. Cute!

Jean de la Fontaine a écrit 240 fables pendant le 17ième siècle. (Jean de la Fontaine wrote 240 fables during the 17th century). De la Fontaine refers to the author of the stories, although his name does mean from the fountain. I remember reading his stories when I studied for my degree in French.
I'd love to find a book like that. I'm a high school French teacher and love using children's stories.
All the comments in different languages are a lot of fun!
Fun post Diane! I speak fluent Chicago English with lots of swearing thrown in and a pretty passable Kentucky southern drawl. Lol. I'm actually learning Spanish right now but I read it better than hear it, if you can understand what I mean by that. Xo
Hi there namemate! Those are great and priceless finds!!! The book was totally preserved since its conception in 1898!!! I would love to touch and feel the book on my own hands.
I never learned anything French though haha Though someday, I wish to see the beautiful Paris.
Wishing you a great week ahead namemate! Thank you for forever linking up.
Oh how fun! And believe it or not, today we had a missionary family in church who live in France I love listening to people speak another language :)
Hugs to you!
Love the illustrations in your fable book! I took French but couldn't begin to communicate with anyone :)
Bonjour Diane, These are lovely books and like you I love old books, I love the smell of them and the feel of them. I find that with a lot of 18th century books the pages feel a lot thinner and lovely to the touch.
These are lovely books to treasure.
Best Wishes
Daphne
Darling books! Gracias. That's all I remember!
Always fun to find treasures! Love books and treasures too! I learned a bit of Japanese while living over there. Not really enought to say i speak it. Enjoy your day!!
I was 3 years old when I came to the States, I was jabbering German, but alas, my mother was so intent on learning English the German in me slipped right away. I know a few words, can count in German to 10. That is sad when you think about it. It would be great to be bi-lingual.
(((HUGS))) Susanne :)
You find the most amazing books at the thrift store, Diane! I finally found some good thrift stores in my area and when I get a day free from babysiting I'm going over to explore them!
Si, Diane, yo hablo Español. :)
I read, write, and speak fluent English and Spanish. Studied French in high school and Italian in college, but only remember a little. Speaking it is the key. Love your books and I love that illustration too.
Could not resist stopping by after visiting Vanessa just now. Congratulations on winning the magazine. Yay!! Don't you just love reading A Fanciful Twist? So glad you introduced me a while back.
Have a great day, sis.

Hola, Diane
Que bonitos libros! Como soy Mexicana obviamente hablo español.
Saludos y abrazos,
Caty
Mon ami, Diane, I was born in Montreal, took French in school until I moved to the states when I was 15, and you ask if I can speak it? I can speak a bit, but write it? Mais non! No even sure about my spelling. Ann
How charming those little books. My neighbors 2 doors from me speak French, they would adore these~
Oui! Je parle français en peu. Vos livres pour enfants sont très mignon!
Avoir un grand matin!
xo,
RJ
I think old books are so interesting and yours look wonderful!
Hi Diane,
Just love the vintage French book! One a fab find.
Hugs, Lynnie
LOL, I have a hard enough time with English on most days. And though I wasn't born or raised in the south, I have adopted a distinct southern accent!
