Believe me…you do not want to hear me try to speak French! Most people have trouble understanding my Serious Southern Drawl…in English! heehee! But it’s funny that I do remember my colors, numbers and some of the songs I learned in high school French!
So it was fun to find this old book, published in 1898 at the Thrift Store this week.
And then I remembered some children’s books that I bought a couple of years ago.
Aren’t they charming?
Fables of the Fountain has beautiful stories and illustrations.
I love this illustration best.

Lucky you- these are charming-
I studied French - (my school actually started it in Kindergarden) and some Italian in college to study abroad but as that was about 100 years ago I'm completely rusty at both - lol I really wish I had kept it up better :( - small disclaimer - I double checked my phrase with google translate- lol

What wonderful finds! I speak French and a tiny bit of Spanish. I will have to keep my eye out for some vintage French books, my daughter teaches both French and Spanish and would love having books like these to use with her young students.

That looks funny the way it is written. There should be several accent marks, but I don't know how to do that on the keyboard. (I speak very rusty Portuguese. It has been years since I have used it.)

We study English, French and German in HIghschool and of course Dutch our native language.

Wonderful collection of books.
It's amazing to me how much Spanish I remembered from high school, enough with some fine tuning to be able to communicate with my maternity patients in the hospital. I guess our minds were young then and able to absorb and remember more. Don't you remember names from your childhood better than names today?
Bonjour! That's about all I remember of the few French words I ever learned. Your books are very nice and look wonderfully illustrated! I love seeing the artwork in children's books.

As I live in Spain I have to speak Spanish and I imagine in Florida there are numerous people who speak it too. I also speak Valenciano which is the regional language.
As an English teacher I often use children's books with Adult beginners especially for pronunciation.
I would like to speak many more languages!

The books are so cute. I wanted to take french when I was in school, but I had to take latin for college. Maybe one of these days I could learn it. Never too late they say.
Oui, je parle un peu Francais. I do remember this from high school! Colors, numbers, too :) Many years ago when visiting my cousin in Spain, her car broke down and French tourists helped us. Knowing basic French was so helpful, even in Spain! :)

I only have high school French and what I remember is not that noteworthy.
When our twin granddaughters were filling in forms for school one year, a question asked if they spoke another language. Oh my, one of them wrote down pig-latin.
We still kid her about it to this day.

Bonjour. Great pictures books. I come from a bilingual country, French and English. Cannot speak French very well.
I do not. But I have people who comment on my blog who speak Swedish, French, Japanese, German and Polish (maybe more) but they usually comment in English, even if I have to translate their blogs when I read them. I am so in awe of their bilinigual ability and I wish I did know at least one other language! It's great fun to read about other cultures and that's one of the things I love about blogging.
Another thing I love is seeing your beautiful pictures ... you find such beautiful things ...thanks for sharing your wonderful collections!
Loved this post and adore those books! Sadly I never learned another language. I always wanted to learn Latin, Italian and French but most days I have enough trouble with English.. LOL

Those are sweet books...perhaps one could pick up some French from starting at the beginning again. No, I really dont speak any other languages, though I am taking German lessons via DuoLingo. They are free. You could take up French.

Was für schöne Bücher!!! Of course I speak German since it is my native language. I also speak French and refresh it currently since my daughter learns it in high school. Over the summer we spole a little bit of French every day just to practice. I also learned Chinese - I have a master's degree in Chinese studies - but this is so long ago and when you don't practice it it's so easy to forget.

My high school Spanish was a zillion years ago. Very little remains in my brain. It's been fun watching Emma soak up her French classes.

Jean de la Fontaine a écrit 240 fables pendant le 17ième siècle. (Jean de la Fontaine wrote 240 fables during the 17th century). De la Fontaine refers to the author of the stories, although his name does mean from the fountain. I remember reading his stories when I studied for my degree in French.
I'd love to find a book like that. I'm a high school French teacher and love using children's stories.

Fun post Diane! I speak fluent Chicago English with lots of swearing thrown in and a pretty passable Kentucky southern drawl. Lol. I'm actually learning Spanish right now but I read it better than hear it, if you can understand what I mean by that. Xo

Bonjour Diane, These are lovely books and like you I love old books, I love the smell of them and the feel of them. I find that with a lot of 18th century books the pages feel a lot thinner and lovely to the touch.

I was 3 years old when I came to the States, I was jabbering German, but alas, my mother was so intent on learning English the German in me slipped right away. I know a few words, can count in German to 10. That is sad when you think about it. It would be great to be bi-lingual.

I read, write, and speak fluent English and Spanish. Studied French in high school and Italian in college, but only remember a little. Speaking it is the key. Love your books and I love that illustration too.
