“Healthy Living” Let’s have a Snack!

Before we get too far into this, let me say this is NOT diet food. It’s NOT low calorie but it is healthy. I am not on a diet. My weight has stayed the same for the past several years.  I don’t eat sugar. I eat high protein meals and snacks and try to limit my carbs.

I would also say these are snacks we take with us to eat after a hike. They give you a boost after you’ve exercised.

It’s easy to mix your own trail mix and you can change it up according to what you like.

I buy a lot of the bags of nuts at Walmart but many grocery stores have bins of nuts.

Try to buy raw nuts and then mix in a few ‘mixed nuts’ that are roasted and salted. I always add Craisins and raisins…but just a few!

DSCN3280

Put them into snack size Ziplocks.

Other healthy snacks that we take for day trips are Sharp Cheddar cheese sticks, Wheat Thins and Pretzels.

Don’t pack a snack bag without fruit! I buy organic apples at the Farmer’s Market.

DSCN3284

Slice one up and put it in a baggie!

Oranges and bananas are good too.

Isn’t this little Florida orange cute?

I like to visit a few healthy blogs but if you know of others, please leave them in the comments.

Visit the Low Carb Diabetic HERE. I am not a diabetic but this is good information for ALL of us!

And Latane has a new blog called A Healthy Me HERE!

We ALL know we are going to snack so we need to have some healthy snacks on hand. And we all should have a treat after a good walk to keep us going.

I always pack snacks too for our road trips. My husband and I have worked our way back to good health and we eat only the good thing for you these days. I have fallen in love with walnuts. I actually mix in a snack bag, apples, walnuts, and spinach. Makes a great snack. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and to get off of all the meds, I eat only organic, gluten free, blah, blah, blah health foods. It has worked though.

Thank you for this post! We are actually dieting here at our house - just trying to lose a few pounds. One of the biggest shocks to me has been Craisins are a lot of points on Weight Watchers. I didn't know about the reduced sugar ones. I will definitely be finding those because a day without Craisins just isn't complete. :)

My husband is a nut fanatic and bagging them up like this really helps keep hands out of the cans.

I LOVE nuts, they are my favourite snack! Yep, Trail Mix works for me. Glad it's healthy too!

I just posted about this the other day and I really appreciate your snack ideas! I need to get those little snack bags so I can have things "ready to go" or eat! LOL! Thanks for the links too!

P.S. Just a little note to your commentor Sandy....I too have RA and have since 94 and I went organic and as healthy as I could stand and I have been off all meds for RA which was Enbrel which I could barely afford anyway. I also have Graves disease and there are no recurring symptoms of that either. You go girl!

Wow, I could have written this post, Diane! Except for the occasional scone and lemon bar, this is the type of snack we have around here. Even in my stirfries for dinner, I go heavy on the vegetables and like to top them with a few sliced almonds or cashews and Craisins. They're such great snacks! I did start going easier on the mixed nuts, however, after I made myself realize that a portion size was not a handful every time I felt a bit peckish! LOL Hugs to you - and have a great Wednesday.

Fruit and Healthy nuts are the ideal perfect snack, and so easy! I absolutely love them, too! And, you feel so much better after eating them, then you do junk food. We do organic as much as possible and I'm so grateful we have so much available to us at our local store!

Blessings!!! Net :)

Great ideas, Diane! I've had to go on a GF, dairy free, and limited meat diet for over a year. I've learned that there are so many alternatives and have adjusted well.
Have a super day!

Good morning Diane,
I do the very same thing with nuts, craisins etc. I love to have these small portions of nuts on hand for quick grab snacks when we're on the go. Otherwise I would eat a whole jar of nuts--I love them, all kinds! :) I'll have to check out the "healthy" blog!!! Thanks for the link! xo

I need healthier snacks. I won't reveal that i just had a biscoff cookie with some cookie butter on it.lol No more cookie butter in this house as it is too tempting. Love your trail mix! I think putting it in servings in a baggy is the key to staying on track.

Good ideas Diane, and healthy. Similar to what we do. And I love your new header!

Diane, we do similar concoctions here. My grandson lives with us so I always have a jar of peanuts, raisins and chocolate chips for him to snack on. I buy nuts in bulk at BJ's. Your photos make me want to cut up some fruit right now! Have a nice day. ♥

Great post Diane. Hubby has recently been told he needs to cut back/out carbs and eat more protein and he's lost 12 pounds in two weeks. Note I said HE has lost it. Haha. Not me. I'm a sugar addict and boy is it hard to give up! I'm going to visit the blog you mentioned. Thanks for the healthy tips. Have a great day.

I love a good nut mix! Fruit always and cheese of course!

I love nuts and I always mix up my own. It's so easy (and lots less expensive and you get just what you want.)

Seeing this post reminds me I bought two bananas the other day and now I can't find them. Hope they aren't rotting in the car trunk. Off to check!

Good healthy snack advice. We try to eat healthy too, cut out all that sugary stuff, except for once in awhile when we binge on it.

Thanks for the creative ideas. John is diabetic and we have to limit Craisins and raisins and we have to be careful with cereal sugar content too. I enjoy Low Carb Diabetic, too.

Hi Diane, and thanks for the link to the low carb diabetic blog ...

Nuts are just great as a snack, just a handful!
Macadamia's are my favourite.
Pepper sticks, carrot and celery sticks are good to.

Lovely post

All the best Jan

All your snacks look really good. It is also a very good reminder to us who have fallen off the wagon, if you know what I mean. :( Thank you for reminding us to get back on and eat healthier snacks.

These nuts look wonderful, Diane. You're all stacked up for your hikes. The Craisins sound Yummy, never had those before. Have you ever tried macadamia nuts? They're kind of expensive, but oh, so good. :)

It's good of you to be eating so healthy, Diane.

I think it is neat that you make your own trail mix.
I like Trader Joe's crackers that have cranberries in them. I always liked Wheat Thins until I came across them.

Yummmm - and now I'm wanting a snack - and we had dinner not long ago. I like to take cut up apples for a snack - and some nuts. Now and then I'll toss in a few chocolate chips, just for fun, along with raisins and nuts - love the taste. It is funny how we always take snacks in the car - we may not even get out of the car if the weather is not welcoming - but we like to have a little snack while viewing nature or taking photos. If we plan an adventure out of the car we often pack a lunch - some sandwiches, water, pretzels and some fruit - or a cookie too. Something easy to carry and fun to eat. Food just tastes so good outdoors. Happy hiking!!!

One of my biggest issues is I snack too much! And sometimes not the best stuff. I'm a grazer. Trying to remedy that. You have made smart choices there!

Looks so delicious. Nuts are so healthy, but I must eat them in very low doses because they tend to pack on the pounds for me. I am diabetic so I do avoid sugar and simple carbs. Great suggestions here.

What a yummy post full of snacks. We eat many of the same things, especially when we're hiking or on a road trip. But you forgot the dark chocolate! I always take along a bit of 70 or 85% - for that final satisfying treat! Happy hiking days to you.

These are all great snacks to take along on your hikes! I do have to try and be better and not run to the chips and dip isle at BJ's and Costco! I will try to have healthier snacks in the afternoon. Thanks for your inspiration! :)
I enjoyed looking at your visit to the park! It's so nice that you and your husband take these nice day trips together. :)
Enjoy the weekend.

What great snacks. I miss nuts SOOOO much. I developed an allergy to Tree Nuts when I was 30. It has been so hard. I grew up on PB and nuts. There were not a day in my 20's that I didn't eat almonds or PButter. It has been often difficult to remember I can't have them. I have to carry and epi pen and steroids. It is crazy.

That is my favorite cheese!!!
