We had never seen a Green Heron in the wild here in Florida until a couple of weeks ago. (well, not that we could positively identify )
First we saw one at Homosassa Wildlife Park but it was not ‘in the wild’ there.
A few days later we hiked at Blue Run Park and got the thrill of a lifetime!
There was a Green Heron in the swamp.
One that didn’t mind posing for us.
Well, maybe he was even a bit of a ham!
Then lo and behold, we saw one at Rainbow Springs State Park IN THE WILD!
Isn’t that funny how we finally saw one…
then two…
then three!
I guess that’s our lucky number now!

I was lucky in the fact that late last spring when down on the dock--a green heron came and landed on the railing long enough for me to get a good photo of him--didn't know what kind of bird it was at the time--haven't seen one since though--so you seeing 3 is good--they say they are secretive type birds--soo--

That is so cool! So glad when you spot these.....I learn alot about birds from you! I love the last picture the best, what a great and clear shot! Do you do anything specific/special with your bird pictures? I am thinking a small album or scrapbook would be so neat, with maybe the date spotted and the picture or something? Something to take out and enjoy over and over! would be neat to pass down as well.
Hope you are having a real nice weekend! We are working in the yard and porches.....whew!! Lots of hard work and not much play this weekend. But it will be worth it. Hubby dug me new flower beds and we cleaned and swept away the dirt/webs/dust/winter and got ready for spring and new seeds/plants to put into pots and in the ground, etc. Got the lawn furniture clean, etc.
Nice work Diane. Once you "get your eye in" with a particular species you then know where to look, waht to look for, and often when to look. Experience counts for a lot in birding.

...and aren't they gorgeous? My favorite of all the herons. Hope you can get to see them in breeding colors eventually...their legs go from yellow to ORANGE...a bright, deep salmon colored orange.

Wow - you were certainly lucky - grand photos. I like how their front feathers blend in with their surroundings when they stretch their necks out. What a glorious walk you must have had. Enjoy the new week my dear friend. (It is snowing here again)
Your Florida birds are so interesting, Diane. The Green Heron is an unusual looking bird. These are great pics. It looks like he has a head of green feathers hehehe.

Oh yes, you are definitely on a roll! We've seen green herons in the wild before, but I haven't sighted a single one this season. Maybe some of your luck will rub off on me just from reading this lovely post; your pictures are outstanding.
