Need help with flower ID!

I thought I would sneak in an extra post this week. I hiked yesterday and saw this flower blooming in the woods. I was hiking the Florida trails and there are lots of Oaks and Pines and sandy soil.

(it looks like this when I hold it up to show the center)

This flower appears to be growing on a small shrub or young tree branch.

(and like this when it’s hanging naturally)

I’ve googled everything I can think of. Even….white flower growing on a limb which got me a lot of people with tattoos! lol

flowerIMG_5772

(several blooms on a limb)

Any idea what it is? Any clue on what I could search? I’ve tried Florida wildflowers, bell shaped flower, white, pale yellow…I’m obsessed now with figuring it out!!!

(the whole plant)

I hiked at midday. It was 81 degrees which doesn’t sound bad but the humidity was HIGH and it felt SO HOT!

I came home and found this flower in my wildflower ID book.

  coralbeanIMG_5785

It’s Coralbean.

And I already know what this bird is! But a lot of people here call them Ravens. I usually think it’s a Crow but they are BIG!

I’m very thankful for beautiful weather and great places to hike!

I’m joining Thankful Thursdays

and Wildflower Wednesday.

I have no idea what the flower is,, it is lovely though,, so much confusion with crows and ravens,, their size and tail feathers reveal their true identity lol, I have enjoyed painting both birds many times, clever handsome birds.I hope you find the answer to your question,

I don't know, but I am curious. I will have to keep checking back on the comments to see if anyone else could identify it.
Walks are wonderful. I think I will go on a long one myself today.

I've no idea. It sort of has the look of an orchid but I don't know about orchids in the wild. Lovely, though.

Good luck finding the name of that flower. It is so pretty, did you check to see if it have a fragrance?
Have a sweet week.

I love blackbirds. Their vocalizations are cool.

Diane, Look under Tulip Poplar trees. It looks like the bloom from one. We have two of those trees here, but nothing is blooming yet...to much winter weather still. Love seeing birds and flowers on your site. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

I don't know what that is but I'm definitely curious.

It’s a mystery! Hope you find out it’s name! Have you ever seen it before?
You do have great places to walk! I’m always so impressed with what all you see.
My daughter is in Puerto Rico and the weather there is just as you described. Not so awful hot but the humidity makes it so uncomfortable!
I applaud you walking in it! In the summer I either walk early in the morning - which doesn’t happen often - or late at night.
I’ll be walking the rounds at the ranch doing Critter Chores starting this weekend!

Hello, I agree with the commenter above, it looks like a tulip Poplar bloom. But, the leaves are different.. They are pretty flowers and I love the crow shot.

I have never seen this bloom before...beautiful. I find cornus (dogwood) that is similar but not with the maroon. Also, bunchberry is similar but not an exact match. Good luck!

Here in Kentucky we would call it a crow, but when it is that big, a Raven. Though, I am usually in a different state to see a Raven. Thanks for linking up today!

I am guessing right along with everyone else. Can't wait to find out what this beautiful flower is.

About Crows---they have squared-off tails and Ravens have wedge shaped tails.
The flowers is rather pretty. At first I thought of Dogwood---it looks similar---but who knows

Please post an update about the flower. I want to know, too! My uncle was a biology professor. He might know.

I have no idea about the flower or the bird but I do love seeing your photos!

Sure is a pretty flower! It cannot be Tulip Popular because the leaves are the wrong shape, and Tulip Populars don't bloom until they are much taller.
Gail at Clay and Limestone blog might know what it is. Contact her. She loves wildflowers, and I am sure she will be glad to help

What an unusual flower. I also do not know the species. The info about crows and ravens is interesting also. 'Thought they were one and the same, lol.

First time to visit, love your blog, and will add my two cents worth which isn't worth two cents. I don't recognize the plant but I do know what you are to do with the blackbird. It is to be baked in a pie with three and twenty other blackbirds. It is a dainty dish to be set before a king.

...four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie. When the pie was open the birds began to sing...

p.s.: Told you my two cents was worthless.

The flowering tree is a beauty but I don't have a guess. Our most common blackbird is a grackle. They are fussy and noisy but that makes it fun.

What a lovely flower! No idea what it could be. The middle looks a little like a passion flower, but I'm sure that is not what this plant is.
Have fun researching this.

Oh tantalising! I wonder what your mystery wildflower is?

MadSnapper said...

so funny to me, bob and i had a loud argument this week over a bird in our tree. crow/raven/black bird???? i said crow he said raven, we both said not a black bird because it was way to big to bake into a pie. ha ha.
I have never seen a flower like this beauty here in Florida. hope someone will ID it for you. try searching for shrub or tree, i don't think it is a wild flower.

Hello Diane!:) LOL!! The Tattoo images you got made me laugh! :=) I agree with Sandra, that it's more likely to be a shrub. The flower is pretty when you are able to look inside.

What a strange flower, Diane! I think ravens are just bigger crows. xo

Did you try the phone app, My Garden Answers? I've used it successfully a few times. You either take a photo, or use one you already have on your phone.

Love that picture of the crow/raven/blackbird, very cool!! wow, never seen flowers like that before I don't think?---it looks like a cross between a hibiscus and a passion flower? ha ha

it's a pretty flower and your images are beautiful, but i have no idea what it is!!!

No help from here -- but it is beautiful. I read on a birding site that we have a different kind of crow in Florida ... it is called a fish crow. It is the one that sounds different from any crows I've ever heard before (it sounds like it says 'UHUH UHUH" (like a little kid saying no ...)

Passion flower and dogwood came to mind when I saw the flower. I heard there's an app for phones that identify flowers for you--maybe that would help. Do let us know when you find out what it is!
