The Gulf Fritillary and Frogfruit!

Did you ever do a post that took on a life of it's own? This one has taken me forever to put together because I keep getting deeper into identification and interesting facts!

Gulf Fritillary Butterfly

We went to the Pruitt Trailhead again on Sunday and saw lots of beautiful butterflies and because of the rain showers we had a few days ago, the wildflowers are blooming like crazy again!

It was very enjoyable and I learned the names of a few more wildflowers. This flower is teeny tiny and abundant!

Frogfruit

(also known by turkey tangle fogfruit and capeweed)

Hubby and I both got some amazing close ups.

Which led me to spend time looking up the terms for the anatomy of a butterfly!

 Always something new to learn!

 I found this diagram online.

I’m joining Angie for Mosaic Monday HERE .

The fact that your blog has sent you on a quest for more knowledge is the finest reason that I can think of for blogging. And in the process you get to share both your images and your new knowledge with the world. Seems to me that is pretty hard to beat.

Great post! I have had similar experiences. I look for one link and then another and I feel as though I'm writing an entry in the encyclopedia. I've definitely learned a lot. Have a great Monday!

That is a stunning butterfly and your photos are great. I tried to google, but did not find a Finnish name for this Agraulis vanillae. Probably not seen in Finland. Wishing you happy MM.

Oh--what a pretty Gulf Fritillary--I do believe that I have a photo of one or two of them when I was down there--but I didn't realize there was so many 'parts' to a butterfly--I just think of the wings and the feelers!!!
and that Frogfruit--that is different--probably seen it before--just didn't know it's name--flower names I am way behind on--mostly cause most of them have toooo long of names for me to remember--I am a simple gal!!!
luv, di

I was intrigued by the frogfruit. Kind of glad to see it isn't something edible as that didn't sound terribly appealing. The Gulf Fritillary is so pretty and your photos are fantastic.
Thank you so much for your input on my header issues, Diane. As soon as I have a some free time I'm planning to sit down and work on figuring out the best plan of action.

Hi Diane! What beautiful photos. What kind of camera took these? If it's a cell phone...Wow! I'm beginning to miss have a "real" camera. Nothing expensive, just one that can take great close ups.
I'm so glad to be back into blogging!

I love it when seeing something in nature leads me to do research like you. Your photos are lovely of intriguing plants and butterflies! Life is full of magic if we take the time to open our eyes.

Diane - I know EXACTLY what you mean about a post taking off on its own! I like learning new things, and I figure if someone else doesn't want to know it, they can skim over that part of my post, right? That Fritillary has quite the proboscis, working on the frogfruit (see, I read your post and looked at the diagram!) It also looks like it is wearing a pair of striped pajamas! Thanks for linking to Mosaic Monday!

Such pretty pictures! Aren't butterflies so fascinating?? You got some great pictures and I sure have never heard of the frogfruit but is sure does look like something the fairies would dance around and perch on, doesn't it? Glad you got out for some fresh air and a walk....it's still just too darn hot here, heat indexes way up past a hundred. I just cant take it like I used to--and we are only doing quick little walks. Hope y'all had a great weekend! Have you been thrifting again lately? I did go, I will have to post what I got.

PS, I am to the last chapter or so of "The Lighthouse Keeper's Daughter"....it's been a great read, I LOVED IT!!!

Beautiful butterfly and what an interesting flower. Frogfruit doesn't seem to fit it.

beautiful captures diane and some great information even i didn't know!! i have read a lot about their live journey, from egg to butterfly, it is fascinating!! also all the things the caterpillar does to accommodate becoming a butterfly. i want to get a book, a nice coffee table book - we will have to go to barnes and noble.

this is a gorgeous butterfly, one i don't see here. i have 15 chrysalis right now...so now we wait, for the butterflies to come!!

and yay for wildflowers!!

You are a hiker, a photographer, a crafter, an artist, a collector and now a teacher . . . Bravo! Gorgeous and most interesting post :)

These are some wonderful images! I love seeing butterflies and especially tiny, tiny flowers!

I can certainly relate to a post taking on a life of its own! One identification leads to more information and that leads to searching words and photos and on and on...!!

You lucky woman to see such an amazing sight in person and to catch it all with your camera. Butterflies always conjure up warm, comfy-cozy feelings in me. To find a fabric print like that that first butterfly's coloring, oh my!

My feeling is that it is an exceptional season for butterflies (well in the UK at least!) So it would be easy to see how fascinating it is to delve deeper into research on them - and for us to read! Great photos they are hard to capture!

I love butterflies and your photos are stunning. This morning they are spraying the woods around where I live for mosquitoes. I know they are going to kill the bees and the butterflies too. I hate it, but know I can't stop them. so I am spending the morning curled up in my apartment mourning their loss. xo Laura

The photos of your butterflies are absolutely amazing and beautiful. I've never had a desire to delve deeper into knowledge or identification of the beautiful things I see outside. I simply appreciate their "eye candy". But I'm glad there are folks out there like you, to educate me quite by accident. Lovingly, Andrea xoxo

We have spotted some beauties here in Maryland but I don't think they are as abundant as last year.

Great information -- I really appreciate your research and your beautiful photos. And oh my do I know what you mean about posts taking on a life of their own. My trip posts are taking a lot of time because i have to try to remember what we learned and google stuff to make sure I have it right and get my pictures in order and ....etc etc etc. But it's all worth it -- keeping my aging brain (a little bit) active.
