Playing favorites?

There are a lot of birds and critters that we hope to see when we hike.

But some are more fun than others.

We haven't seen a Sherman's Fox Squirrel in several months and this one was good enough to climb a tree near the trail.

And he stayed there and looked down on us. Maybe we were a funny sighting for him...we didn't think to ask. We do go tsk tsk tsk to let him know he's safe around us.

You can see his 'foxy' tail in this one!

We spotted him on a hike from the 49 Ave Trailhead, walking West.

And then there are the Florida Scrub Jays!

We saw a small flock of these at the Halpata Tastanaki Preserve this week.

As a matter of fact, we hiked for over 2 hours and saw them when we were in sight of the Jeep at the end of our hike. They are so special to see. They are only found in Florida and very rare.

It's also fun to spot deer out in the woods.

And how about this Juvenile Eagle? He was soaring right over our heads at HTP.

It's been such a good week of special sightings and beautiful weather.

But did someone say 'favs'?

What's new in your part of the world?

I’m joining Saturday’s critters HERE

and I’d Rather B Birdin’.

LOVE the squirrel's foxy tail! I enjoy seeing your critter photos. We have two cardinal pairs in our backyard. One of the males is VERY fat!

I love your walks!! Or HIKES!!!
You do see amazing things down there where you go. I make do with run of the mill birds and possums where I live! I guess that's why I get such a kick out of seeing what YOU see!

Sherman's Fox Squirrel is new one on me. Never heard of it but I always appreciate seeing new animals even if I won't see them for real. The Scrub Jay is nice looking bird and a shame it is so restricted in its range to make it vulnerable. Enjoy the weekend Diane.

Wow, love seeing all the wildlife, for the time being we live very close to the Everglades where after dark you will never know what will be out.During the day Egrets March around, had one in my yard last week whom seemed to like the shiny outdoor Christmas decor lol. I just had to take some photos of him as his visit was long. Thankyou for sharing your wonders photos. Lisa @Sweet Tea N' Salty Air

The Florida Scrub Jays are such pretty birds. Glad you could see them. The other day a heron flew over the house and landed in a tree in the neighbour's yard, right where I could see him from my kitchen window. Amazing.

I love the Fox Squirrels, and they are getting to be so rare. You are blessed to have had this close encounter with him. And of course I love the Scrub Jays too, another Florida favorite that is hard to find. Deer I love and see more often, and the juvenile eagle, well, I am never too sure if it is an eagle or a buzzard unless I get a close look. It's hard to tell in the sky. I love seeing eagles, though. They are all my favorites. Thanks for sharing.

What a wonderful hike with so many beautiful photos. I've always wondered if tsk tsk tsk works on squirrels, as I do it automatically, but I never see a difference. I don't let the ones that visit my yard get too friendly, as many people here will harm them.

I have never seen a squirrel like that with such a long tail. One of our squirrels around here likes to sit on the wall outside my kitchen window and stare at me. Guess I am a funny sight too.

I love, love, love all the critter pictures. Well, it rained here! That's something very new in my world. And more will come according to the weather reports. Yeah!

Hi Lavender Dreamer, Re: Photo #1 … How on earth did you get that wonderful photo of the Sherman’s Fox Squirrel. That photo put a big smile on my face. Thank you! I continued enjoying the other photos as well. You walked for 2 hours … How far did you go? It took me about 50 minutes to walk my 2.25 miles this morning. So I’m thinking you must go 5 miles or more. Excellent! Thank you for sharing your walk with us and all the photos. I send you wishes for a happy week ahead! John

your Fox Squirrel is much darker then our Red one. And it seems to have a different shape of the head.
Always love to see the Jays and deer :)

Eeeeeek, you know I'm a bit scared of the squirrels, and the fox squirrel is no different. But he's a cute fellow in photos, and he DOES have a foxy tail. I haven't seen many squirrels right now in my front yard cause it's too cold I think, and they are hiding somewhere hehehe. Oh, those scrub jays are so pretty and blue. We call them Blue Jays here, and they look very much the same as yours. What lovely pictures you got of him. And the deer, what a blessing to see him in the woods. : )
