Ochlockonee River State Park and the Woodpeckers

I have to admit to saving these photos for a special post. We went to Ochlockonee River State Park at the beginning of summer before it got too hot.

It was strictly time and chance to get to see these woodpeckers and I was proud of the few photos I took.

I aimed my camera at the tree when I saw a Red-bellied Woodpecker flying in.

While I stood there and watched, I realized this one was relieving the other one of baby duty.

A young one stuck his head out of the hole while I stood watching in awe. (you have to use your imagination)

And in a blink of the eye, the 2 adults had flown away and the baby went into hiding. But while it lasted, it made me happy to be at the right place at the right time.

On this same hike down by the river, I saw other woodpeckers.

Another young one showed up behind the adult.

Isn't he the cutest!!

I kept walking until I had reached a forest trail.

The Orange Milkweed was in full bloom.

And some pretty Phaon Crescents were enjoying the blooms.

I always tell people, the best way to get good photos is to go out often.

You always see something of interest, don't you think?

I’m joining Saturday’s critters HERE

  and Mosaic Monday HERE.

The pictures of the woodpeckers are AWESOME! You were at the right place at the right time. They are fascinating birds to watch. We have a family of woodpeckers living in the woods behind our house. We have named the oldest one Woody, after Woody Woodpecker. He is quite naughty when visiting the feeder on the back deck. Woody will land on the underside of the railing and pull the tail feathers of anyone in his way! The startled bird will chirp and fly away at which time Woody will help himself to their abandoned leftovers. He likes to poke a sunflower seed between the cracks in the wood and break it open with his beak. He has developed quite a reputation and would not win a popularity contest.

Hello Diane :)
What brilliant captures, just wonderful encounters of both the woodpeckers and the butterflies, and the Milkweed is very pretty. I did use my imagination, Diane, and think you were very lucky to notice so much :)
It's 35degrees here, but it has been 37degrees, so it's far too hot to go outside, and the forecast for Monday and Tuesday is 42 degrees!
Thank you for sharing your gorgeous captures, I really enjoyed seeing them.
Hugs
Sonjia.

Such beautiful woodpeckers. Your photos are spectacular, Diane. We have various kinds of the birds here, too. It's always fun when they land at our feeder in the fall and winter.

what an exciting photography moment...and even if you did not have your camera, it is always such a thrill to see and watch these beautiful birds care for their young. lucky for us, you did have the camera and were able to capture these moments, and save them for all time!! your images are amazing!! i would not have been able to save them for a special post, no not me, and you should be very proud!! you are right, go out often and be patient. some of my best pictures came from being patient. the butterflies are gorgeous!! enjoy the weekend, it is a little cooler here today and have a great new week!!

What a terrific opportunity! Great shots of the Red-bellied family. Love the butterflies and milkweed. We are almost back to "normal" and had our first woods trek since April last week. Sure is hot out there. I love it!

Dear Diane,
you truly captured some fantastic shots of the woodpeckers – both the big ones and the little ones. How utterly delightful! 🪵❤️ I once had the chance to observe woodpeckers feeding their young, too, but the chicks were barely visible, tucked away deep inside their nest…
The Orange Milkweed is such a beautiful and fascinating plant – and those Phaon Crescents match it perfectly in color and spirit. 🧡🦋 You’re absolutely right: we’d miss out on so many of these breathtaking sights if we didn’t step outside. Life is far too precious to be spent cooped up indoors all the time!
Wishing you a joyful and wonder-filled August! (And thank you for your sweet comment.)
Hugs, Traude 🌼

This IS a special post. The woodpeckers are just fantastic and I haven't seen one for quite some time. These are especially beautiful. So, too, is your butterfly, so beautifully color coordinated with its floral background. These are stunners, Diane.

Well it's not a blackbird I would see in my back garden, not with red on anyway, got some with white spots on which looks a bit odd I must admit. Love those woodpeckers
