Photographing the Handsome Mr. Heron!

Just about every errand I run takes me past the library pond. I have to admit, I even go out of my way sometimes to drive by. It attracts so many birds and I carry my camera with me most of the time.

I thought I would share my thoughts on photography today. Not deep thoughts….maybe more like observations.

I drove into a little parking area and walked straight to the pond and saw this beautiful Great Blue Heron.

He had his head pulled in and was in full view.

(perfect for a May calendar, don’t you think?)

Okay…one more photo from this spot.

(he’s preening in this one)

Now I’ve decided to walk down the sidewalk along the road to take a few more.

I love all of the pond grasses!

This one (my favorite) is before I get to a spot that opens up for a clear view.

Now he’s seen me and decides to stand up straight! lol

I back out to get a bit of an overview.

And when I get home and load my pics onto my computer, I’m surprised at how different they all look. They are all the same Heron, in the same spot, taken within 10 minutes of each other.

AMAZING!

I’m joining Saturday’s critters HERE

and I’d Rather B Birdin’.

Wow Diane, I am always amazed at the wildlife you find! These are great photos! We have a bald eagle that visits my neighborhood every once in a while and I have never had my camera or phone with me to catch a photo. One day about a month ago, the eagle flew very close to our moving car. He looked right at me through the windshield! No camera and not enough time to get my phone out of my purse. I should learn from you and just always have it ready to point and shoot! Have a nice weekend Diane!

These photos are wonderful, but I have to say that I worry about you. I do hope that you have a big zoom on your camera and that you are not trapping through that tall grass to get these photos. Girl friend, there are alligators in that grass around those freshwater ponds.
I hope you are being VERY careful.
Connie :)

All terrific shots - my favorite is the one from the distance because it gives me an idea of where you are and the overall environment - I can see why you like to go there often!!! You are right that you can take some very different pictures just by changing the angle, etc. Creativity has its bountiful rewards!! I am glad to be back to blogging after my trip to Ohio!

Great pictures! Yes, when they are not standing straight, and are all hunched/scrunced up, they give me a crick in the neck just looking at them! ha ha LOL I'm like you, I carry my camera EVERYWHERE with me. The one time I leave it at home would surely be the one time I would miss that "one great picture", ha ha! Hope your weekend is going well. Pretty laid back here, no plans, we took a drive today and went thrift store shopping. I'm like you---I would've turned the butterfly the other way as well! (the one on the tree) Always glad you have stopped by....love to see your comments.

Very nice shots of the heron. It sure does pay to have your camera with you. It seems like every time I leave home without it, I see something interesting. Happy Sunday!

They are truly beautiful creatures. My parents used to spend the winter in an apartment that overlooked a Heron Rookery (until a bald eagle came by day after day and destroyed it!). I used to love to watch the take-offs and landings!
