Hiking, Morning, noon or night!

I've had to hike in the mornings this summer because of the heat but now we are getting some nicer temps and it's always fun to see if there's something out at different times of day.

On a morning hike this week I saw a beautiful Sharp-shinned Hawk.

He holds his body so straight!

It's usually easy to ID him, even from a distance.

And then when I went out right after 'noon' I saw the most beautiful Fox Squirrel.

It's not the one I usually see!

It was a golden color and had less black on it's head.

Let's hope the two get together!

He...or she is big and the tail looks like a fox tail!

And then I went out after dinner one evening. I had hoped to see some deer but instead I saw a Kestrel with some of the best markings I've ever seen.

He wasn't very close and I was losing the light...

but I was happy with the photos!

I've hiked extra this week and been on the computer less! I'll try to catch up this weekend!

Are you having some nice weather too?

I’m joining Saturday’s critters HERE

     and I’d Rather B Birdin’.

Hi Diane. First line here in a very long time. Tomorrow we will be wishing for a sunny Florida get away since a major storm is on its way, though we never know how accurate the weather forecast really is. Great photos of the hawks. We have both of those hawks here, but they are not as easily photographed. Have a great weekend.

Your photos are amazing! I like seeing what you see on your hikes! I will be walking again (I don’t hike!) after I get my knee replaced. I miss my walks although they are no where in the same league as yours!

Oh my, the photos are wonderful. I love the squirrels, outdoors that is. I love watching them play and hunt around for food. I did not realize that there was such a thing as a fox squirrel. Very interesting. You have a wonderful day, hugs, Edna B.

A handsome fellow that hawk, but the fox squirrel freaks me out. He’s huge! 😏 Glad that you are able to get out and enjoy the days when you’d like rather than to needs go in the early morning cool times.

The weather is so nice here. Perfect for hiking, but I have been so busy I haven't had much time for it. Hopefully I will be able to get out this week. How, fun to get out at different times of the day and see new things. xo Laura

I don't think the fox squirrel was as impressed with you as we are impressed by him. He seemed to be bothered by your camera. Next time tell him to smile.

Great photos, as always! I LOVE that fox-tail squirrel. How beautiful! Our temps are cooler but the humidity is still suffocating. Looking forward to better walking weather! I need to work my knees!

When I first read this I thought it said "a sharp SKINNED hawk" ha ha ha LOL! Oh my goodness..........I've never seen anything like those fox squirrels ever!!--they are so amazing. I had to show them to Mr. Front Porch too, we are just so intrigued by them---they look HUGE!! I dont think we have those here. Love the pictures you get of them. I'm pretty sure I'd never even heard of them until you showed them here on your blog about a year ago, maybe?

You really captured the size of that fox squirrel there Diane. And that wonderful tail. And it's always good to see birds of prey, big or small.

We had Fox Squirrels in Texas and Illinois, but never one with such face markings and extraordinarily long tail. Beautiful Sharpie and kestrel. Last winter we had essentially no kestrels. We usually have three on separate foraging territories. So far I have seen one and hope all will decide to spend the winter here. We get out early, 45 minutes before sunrise to beat the heat. This gives me almost a half hour to post on the lake and listen to the sounds of nature waking up. (We may be heading to Charlotte NC around Thanksgiving to join our daughter and husband as they go house-hunting)
