How about a Rhinoceros Beetle for a pet?

It's always interesting to come home after a hike and try to identify everything you saw.

I was pretty sure this was a Rhinoceros Beetle but I was surprised to find out a lot of people keep them for pets. OK...that's interesting! But I think I'll leave him to enjoy the Florida Trails! lol

I hiked the Western section of the Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway twice this past week and saw different birds and critters each time. It's really hot and humid to hike even in the mornings but I love it!

This was a neat sighting.

A Northern Flicker (yellow-shafted)

We've seen them before but the light was just perfect to show off the yellow feathers in his tail.

And doesn't he look like he's part of the tree?

I watched this Brown Thrasher fly across the trail.

He caught a bug and then ran across the trail...I mean RAN!!!

One more neat 'bug'! This is actually a FLY!

A Robber Fly!

You just never know what you'll see when you get out on the trails. Below is a Dayflower.

Ever had a bug for a pet? I had pet turtles when I was a girl and that was fun! We bought them at the dime store! lol

I’m joining Saturday’s critters HERE

and I’d Rather B Birdin’.

I guess you can have whatever suits your fancy as a pet. I think I will stick to guinea pigs and bunnies, however. That fly photo is so interesting! I had lots of turtles from the dime store, too. My brother always let them go in the creek!! Have a great weekend. xxoo

Good morning Lavender Dreamer! "It's always interesting to come home after a hike and try to identify everything you saw." You are so right. I can't tell you how many times I've had the same thought about my walks. Wow, you have wonderful photos in today's post. Very nice work! I can't begin to say which photo is my favorite ... they are all so good. I might surprise you with this ... but that last photo of the Dayflower ... I love that shot! Thanks for sharing all and have a great weekend! John

Fascinating critters. I was also writing about the animals I saw here yesterday, but, as always, Florida has me beat. But being in an exceptional drought, I was happy with my sightings. Back to Florida and your photos. I love the fly! The way you captured it. And that many-colored bird. Yellow and red feathers, he looked so beautiful. Thanks for sharing your beautiful Florida and have a great weekend. With hubby. On the trails.

Great sightings! Northern Flicker is a beautiful bird. I think robber fly is cute and so is the dayflower.

Are they affectionate and demonstrative pets?

Your bird photos are very nice, especially the flicker.

I am not a bug lover even though I worked for the American Entomological Society at one time. They are good to look at from a distance, but I would never have one as a pet. The pictures of the Flicker are outstanding. I have never seen that bird before.

Hello,

Awesome photos of the Flicker and the Brown Thrasher! The fly in new to me, a Robber Fly, that is strange name. The macro fly shots are great. The flower is pretty! Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Take care, enjoy your weekend!
PS, thank you for the comment and visit to my blog.

Great photos! Who would want a big beetle for a pet? I have never seen a robber fly, it's one crazy looking creature! Have a great weekend. :)

I have played with Junebugs but we did not keep them as pets. I do however have "pet" Praying Mantises outside, in that I love to keep an eye on them, put out a bit of cat food to attract flies for them, etc.! I have not seen one this year yet but in years before I have seen them. Your photos are out of this world, as usual!

Such strange and beautiful creatures on this walk! And aren't Brown Thrashers the funniest? I love to watch them run. Love that flower! Never seen one of those before. Happy Saturday, Diane!

I have never heard of a Robber Fly and I have to say that I am not a fan of bugs . . . but your photography made him look amazing.

You find wonderful creatures to photograph. The Northern Flicker is fantastic, the way it appears to be thinking about something.

The Northern Flicker is beautiful. I never heard of the beetle before or the robber Fly. Great captures of them both.

A fun post Diane. I'm worried who might want to enjoy a beetle as a pet. Those walks around the block would take forever. If there are leashes small enough?

Your pics of the Flicker are wonderful!

...they do? That's strange!

Have a happy Sunday!

I have never had a bug for a pet, but I knew a farmer who would bring Praying Mantises into the kitchen to eat the flies.

No, Ivan honestly say no big pets for me! No snakes either. No rodents. But, not surprising, I had Canary.

Loved seeing your bird photos today Diane.
Thanks, as always, for taking time out to share with us and link in!!

I don't think I want a Rhinoceros Beetle as my pet. I rather let it enjoy its freedom. That pretty bird really blends well with the tree. Cute Brown bird running with a bug between its beak. Looks like that bug or fly is starring at you. The Dayflower looks like a bug with big blue wings. Have a wonderful day.

robber fly? And bugs for pets? Strange!
But maybe not. My grandson had lizzards for pets. Mom did not like them much. :) :)
Love your Flicker. :)

Love all your birds and bugs and flowers and beautiful pictures. It's been too wet and humid for very long walks this week. But we still try to get out once a day if even for a short walk. Always something to see! Thank you for sharing your hikes with us. I love seeing all the things you see.

Those are fantastic photos of the Northern Flicker, Diane. Yes, he DOES blend in with the tree. That Robber Fly is so interesting to look at. Kind of creepy but cute in his own way hehehe. The photos of him turned out great! And the blue Dayflower is sweet. This is such a nice post filled with many interesting things of nature. : )

Putting lightning bugs in a jar and then putting them in my bedroom when I was a child would be the closest I could come to having a bug for a pet. We liked to watch them light up as we went to sleep. My mother put a halt to the practice when the lid came off of my sister's jar and they flew out in the house. We could see them flashing in every room at night.
