We hiked in Georgia on our trip! It made it more fun to have a hike planned at the end of the first day of traveling. And even though it was hot and humid, we hiked the S & S Rails to Trails Greenway.
It was a Sunday afternoon and we only saw 2 other people and no bikes, which was a surprise.
The trail has swamp on both sides so you couldn't stand still long to take photos are the 'skeeters' would carry you off.
But it felt good to be walking after driving all day.
One of the funny parts was getting to a tunnel and deciding it was a good place to turn around.
Lo and behold, when you looked up the grassy slope, there was an Olive Garden!
Cracker Barrel and a Mexican restaurant were in full view too. If we hadn't been tired and sweaty, we could have walked right up there and eaten dinner. (we stopped and got KFC chicken on our way to the Hampton Inn instead and enjoyed eating in our room though... a girl needs a refreshing shower before dressing for dinner in her pjs! lol)
Taking a hike was definitely a fun part of the trip.
Have you ever walked on the Rails to Trails paths? They sure are nice!
This flower was blooming like crazy in big shrubs along the trail.
Does anyone know what it is?

...more and more rail lines are being converted to hiking trails. I saw one last week in the Adirondack Mountains.
What a great idea taking a hike the end of a day of driving.
Looks like a great way to "hike" your way home. I don't know what that flower is, but it looks like something the butterflies would love, and maybe hummingbirds too! Glad you had a wonderful trip!

since Savannah is my birthplace, i should know about this trail and the flowers but I don't. I rode the trains from Savannah to here in Bradenton from birth to age 25..I love trains, but this one is new to me. of course it went out of business before i was born. the trail in St Pete is an old railroad and here in Parrish, there is a fun train to ride on old tracks. a great idea to walk after all that riding

Sounds like a lovely trip. I haven't been to Olive Garden in a long time. I'm glad you got a chance to drive through Georgia. Savannah is such a historical town with so many things to see. KFC is always good, isn't it? That was my very first job hehehe. So glad you had a nice road trip, Diane. It's always good to be home. : )

we have a portion of rails to trails here in new jersey and we ride our bikes on it. the egret in the grass is such a cool image!! looks like a great walk...if you ever want some awesome fried chicken, go to cracker barrel, they usually make it when you order it and it's awesome!!

There are about ten Bike Rail Trails in Alabama. I have a friend who's ridden on a couple of them, and she loved it!
I don't see how you walked past a Cracker Barrel. The smell of frying bacon in the parking lot always makes my stomach growl. It is their biscuits that I can't resist; however, either my appetite has grown lately or they have really shrunk in size. Used to be the size of my fist now they aren't bigger than a quarter.

A good hike after a long drive gets the kinks out of muscles and joints, I find. I have not heard of the term Rails to Trails, but I'm assuming it's walking on old rail beds. We have some trails here like that - they are lovely, wide and mostly level
A nice way to stretch your legs after a long drive. KFC sounds good. I haven't had that in a really long time.
Yes, I've walked on rails to trail paths. One was in Florida many years ago when my son lived there - Pinellas trail.

You find all the best hiking spots. So pretty, but I am sorry about the biting bugs.

We bike those trails all the time. I love the railroad bridges and scenic riverways.
What a beautiful and scenic hike! I imagine it is hot and humid this time of year so many hikes very early in the day there? We have to do that because the sun and heat make our air quality poor with ozone most afternoons.
I LOVE Cracker Barrel --especially when it has a cute store attached to it full of all kinds of delights-- but we do not have any near to us. Abut the only time we dine there is during pumpkin season when we go north to the pumpkin farms.
Good exercise and a great adventure. I enjoyed it!
I *might* hike if there is FOOD at the end of it! Ha ha. I think the state bird of Georgia is the mosquito, at least during summer. Oh, they are big fat ones there.

What a nice hike in summer with lovely plants and flowers to meet along the way. I like hikes but we have to start before 7am and finish by 12noon or it gets too hot. I had to google "skeeters" a new word for me, I thought it was alligators carrying you off! I like the bark of the tree wth red strips in your end of trail pix, a gum tree? The St john's wort flowers are beautiful. I always have a bath and dress before dinner at 7pm after cooking, always best dressed at table in my pyjamas, like you on holiday. Following your interesting posts.

I love your red Jeep! What a nice trip you've been on. The pictures are wonderful! I love that you stopped at the Piggly Wiggly and stopped at the railroad crossing for a train to pass. It was fun to look back and catch up with your posts. Just called my husband back to see your pictures. He was born in Georgia, Swainsboro and one of his sisters was born in Statesboro.
What a fun trip! Love the photos and seeing the restaurants after the hike heeheehee. We hiked at the Garden of the Gods a few weeks ago. It was wonderful, we found an area where there were not so many people,it was peaceful and saw horseback riders. I have missed seeing you here. Good to see you have had a nice trip. Take care. We used to take our bicycles with us when we were full-time RVers and the rails to trails path I remember riding was called the Katy Trail . It was in Missouri I think, or maybe Kansas or maybe both,. Anyway it was a great scenic path and I was really impressed that they had turned the abandoned railroad into such a beautiful trail. such a great idea.

What an interesting history of that rail line. I love trains and I am so sorry that we don't have more of them. It would save carbon emissions and people's time and stress commuting. Glad you had a lovely trip.
