It's fun to look back at previous posts to find out when you first learned about a particular bird or critter.
The first time I saw a Sharp-shinned Hawk (and properly identified it) was in 2019. The post was HERE.
And it was only about 2 miles from the one I saw this week!
Maybe less as the crow flies...or in this case the hawk!
I saw it at the very beginning of my hike and was lucky that it landed nearby. It's a small hawk and stands very upright.
It was breezy that day and he has a few ruffled feathers!
The Sumac is still blooming and I saw what I thought was a big wasp on one flower head.
But now I think it's a Trichopoda fly. There were other tiny wasps on the blooms too.
I saw a Northern Harrier, but in this photo he is high in the sky and impossible to pick out!
I noticed a couple of new markings on the paved part of the trail.
The heart was showing the turn for the trail I hike through the woods.

Dear Diane, the Sharp-shinned Hawk sat very well as a model for you! A handsome fellow (I assume it's a "he"?), even if he's a bit wind-blown. The wasps (or maybe other insects) also kindly stayed on the sumac for you. Unfortunately, on my morning walk today I saw only a few uncooperative animals like butterflies and birds fluttering around... And it was too hot. But it was still beautiful.

identifying the birds, critters and flowers is so much fun...i love my bird books!! how wonderful that they have marked the pavement in case anyone needs help, you know exactly where you are on the trail. i love the heart, good eye on spotting it!! enjoy the long weekend!!
I am thinking that that new sign about calling 911 is because of this incredible heat that we've been living through and that some maybe somebody's had trouble by getting overheated. It's a great idea! We have those tiny walls all over some of our bushes in the backyard. I'm not happy with them but they do sting but have not stung me but they have stung the dogs. That Hawk is absolutely stunning
If you get two of these I had lost the first one just pick whichever one is best and post it haha. It'll be okay to have two from the Mad Snapper because everybody knows I'm mad! The hawk is stunning and we have those tiny bees or wasp tiny wasp all over the trees in our backyard and they have stung the dogs but have never gotten made because I stay far away from them they love the powder bush

Oh, I love your photos of the hawk. I don't think I've ever seen one like that before. If I did, I didn't know what it was! And love the insects on the sumac. Sumac trees are so pretty when they bloom and also when the leaves turn red. I guess they are poisonous, at least that's what I was always told, but I wouldn't eat them anyway. Yes, I love to see the "monsters" in the woods. You saw some good ones! I like the sign on the pavement. That's a good idea, if you happen to have a problem right there. But what if you are further down where there is no sign? Oh well, it's still a good idea and once people see it there it will help them remember where they are if help is needed. Hope you have a peaceful Labor Day weekend. Try to stay cool!

It’s always fun to see a hawk up close. Once (exactly once) a hawk actually landed on the railing of our front porch. That’s the closest I’ve ever been.

The first time I saw a sharp shinned hawk was years ago in our backyard. It was perched on my son's trampoline being very still. The squirrels didn't hide like they do for regular hawks but they stopped what they were doing and started at him intently.
The sharp shinned hawks may be small but they have a fierce countenance.

Hey Diane, popped over to let you know which washer I would recommend, per your request. They're not cheap, but the Speed Queen machines are the ones my son-in-law recommends. He says they're the best ones out there for quality and longevity. He buys and sells washers and repairs them so he knows which ones last and are the least trouble.
