Tsala Apopka Outfall Canal

 Ready for an adventure?

We'll drive out to the dam....but only this once!

So look around and take all the photos you want because this will be the only time you get to go!

The road was rough. ROUGH? There has to be a better word for it!

Little Blue Heron, Anhinga

But for all locals, DON'T GO! Even with a high profile, 4 wheel drive vehicle it is a challenge.

Alligator and Stork

And there are birds and a monster gator to see but you can see those things in other places that are easier to get to. I was at least glad that we didn't meet anyone on the road. MEET ANYONE? NO WONDER!

Monster Gator

Stork flying away! lol

But before you think I went on a back road far far away. It was not far away and people lived on that road. But it was not maintained and there were holes big enough to bury the Jeep. I was driving, hubby was helping as in.....stay on the gas and ease through....don't stop....climb out of it.....get through the next hole....over the next hill....hug the right.....go off into the ditch on the left....through mud and muck and vegetation....no place to turn around....KEEP GOING!!!

ATV in distance, this was the only wide spot in the road!

We met one big truck with a trailer load of ATVs (driven by a lady) and one ATV (driven by a little girl).

Osprey

Stay CALM....HOLD ON!

Osprey

Sandhill Cranes

So these are some of the neat things we saw when we were back there.

Jeep, Colored Pencil

Am I glad we went....well of course!

Will we go again? Short answer...NO!

My sons will be proud of me. I DROVE that Jeep!

One gorgeous flower....just ONE!

Get out there and do something exciting this week!

I’m joining Saturday’s critters HERE

and I’d Rather B Birdin’.

Hello Diane,

The road does look horrible, I am glad you have your jeep for riding on those roads. The birds are wonderful, love the Stork in flight, the Osprey and Anhinga. The gator does look huge. The sky looks lovely, a nice day for your outing. Great photos. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Take care, have a happy weekend.

I guess that road was meant for ATV's only? Or maybe it SHOULD have been labeled that way! I'm proud of you for persevering and making it through, and then of course you had to go back out, right??? Wow. Anyway, the pictures are wonderful...and that water lily is amazing! Mine haven't started to bloom yet, but we don't have any purple ones here. That is really pretty. Thanks for sharing. Hope your jeep is not too much worse for the wear! Have a happy Saturday.

WOW! That is quite the adventure. Years ago we did some off roading out in Colorado. My card is fully punched on that. Every hole you hit, you worry about getting a flat; plus the pounding makes you want to pee....and there's no where to do that...plus as you said, don't stop, keep going. Great pictures. I'm into calmer adventures these days.

Wow, Diane I am amazed that you drove the Jeep through all of that! It looks deserted but I enjoyed looking at the photos of everything. Have a nice weekend Diane.

You sure know how to use a Jeep! My son always laughs and calls Jeeps mall crawlers because most who own them never use them as they are meant to be used. You and your Jeep should be proud! :)

wow what a ride, or make that Drive. I would not go back either. and all the things you saw you see any other more acessible and more beautiful places. the only plus is you can add it to the places you have visited list

Yikes! There would have been some fancy moves as I gave over the wheel to the husband. You did good!

The road looks terrible, you did well.
I enjoyed seeing your photographs.

All the best Jan

Good grief! And people LIVE along that road???
The ranch road here used to be so bad when it rained that you could not get out! It's greatly improved now but can still be tricky!

A shame about that road because it looks such an interesting and unspoilt place to see birds and animals. Please don't damage that jeep for when I get to drive it. I quite like alligators, but then I am several thousand miles away from meeting one. LOL.

I've been on excursions like this (broken oil pan one time). Heck, I couldn't go there in the first place 'cause I can't even pronounce it.

Thanks for linking up this week. Love all the critters seen & shared.

Oooh that sounds like some of our adventures in Eastern Oregon last year. (Not the alligator part LOL). But I was definitely *NOT* driving. I’m proud of you too.

That really sounds like an adventure, dearest Diane! :-D And your description of the condition of the road reminds me of TWO trips in Jamaica: The first went to a well-known waterfall... There were only remnants of the asphalt that were as narrow as a bicycle tire. We couldn't believe we were right and asked a man sitting on the roadside in front of his shack. He confirmed and sent us his son who rode his bike in front of us and showed us the rest of the way. (The boy on the bike was faster than we were in the car. We had a regular car, not a 4WD...) The waterfall was well worth the effort though!! Later we found out that there is a second road at the back of the hill - buses can also go there, but it would have been a big detour from our side... - And on another day we wanted to go to a place at where you can see manatees. The road was good at first and we were amazed at the little traffic and the questioning looks from people on the side of the road. (But there hadn't been a sign to warn of problems.) It soon got worse and worse, and eventually there were holes in the road through which you could see the river below! I really wanted to go to the manatees, but at some point there was a hole that was so big that we had to give up because we were afraid for the rental car and for our health... Too bad, no manatees...
Unlike us, you saw interesting animals. Even that gator, what a HUGE beast! The stork did well to fly away :-)
Thank you for the adventure and the memories it sparked <3 <3 <3
Thanks for your super-nice comments,
hugs and happy weekend

Jeeo driving is so much fun, isn't it? I enjoyed this trip a lot, but wouldn't have wanted to run into that gator. What would you do if you foud him parked across the road? Reading the Orchid Thief right now, it's all about the orchids of Florida.

You would make a great driving instructor. :) What a fantastic adventure and you still got some great photos.

Hello Diane, :=) I'm glad you arrived back home safely, and didn't damage your lovely "to die for" Jeep. In spite of the bumpy roads you did see some wonderful wild life and I enjoyed seeing the whopping alligator, Sandhill Cranes, the Osprey, and the one that got away!:=)

Ricki Treleaven said...

How close were you to the alligator? I had one chase me in Louisiana on Avery Island. I do not like them!

Have a good rest of the week.
