Summertime Books and Movies

I've mentioned how HOT it is here in Florida this month. And now we are having showers roll through. The rain is needed but it makes it hard to plan your day. When we have a rain shower, it rains and then the sun comes out and leaves it hot and muggy. Later...we might even get another shower. But I'm still finding lots to do inside. When I get 'cabin fever' I go to some of my favorite places and then walk in my neighborhood in the evenings.

I found these beautiful old books for sale in the lobby of my local public library.

I love the illustrations in these books.

Isn't this cover beautiful?

The Princess series! Don't you love that and the little sticker inside the front cover that says "Be An Angel, Wait 'til Dec. 25th"!

Last winter I read some of the Little House on the Prairie books. They are so enjoyable, no matter what your age!

Aren't the little drawings at the beginning of each chapter pretty?

I started reading a mystery series by John Dunning and the main character, Cliff Janeway collects rare books. I really fell in love with the references to the books he found and what he collected!

We've also watched a few 'new to us' movies lately. We can check them out from our community library and keep them over the weekend so that's been a lot of fun. Well, unless you get one that is terrible. I'll start with that one. The Favourite....it was just awful and we only watched for about 15 minutes before we turned it OFF! Creepy and crude!

But we watched a wonderful movie this past weekend.

Instant Family

We both loved it! Lots of great actors and a beautiful story!

I’m joining Angie for Mosaic Monday HERE .

Little Lady Marjorie looks really adorable on the book cover <3 Old children’s books have their nostalgic charm - wonderful drawings! I have not seen Instant Family, it is a new movie from this year. Thank you for the tip - enjoy your day!

I love LIW books. They are classics as far as I am concerned. I never tire of them. I have been thinking about rereading many of the books I read to my classes. I am missing those books. Little House in the Big Woods was one of those.
Hot it is!!! I am melting on my morning walks even at 6:00 AM.

We had a lot of those old children's books when I was young. They had been passed down to my mother when she was a child. I think that older adults would probably enjoy them because the drawings are charming. I really enjoyed the John Dunning books. I have a thing for bookseller or librarian themed mysteries.

...it's hot enough here now, I can't imagine what you are 'enjoying.'

it is hard to find a good movie at the library in summer time. school is out and families go and get as many as they want at one time. it is great for them to have free movies for summer viewing. i found bluray movies that we can't watch because all we have is the dvd cheap player.. my comment about our summer heat is NO COMMENT

I love old children's books. I'm not so sure young children love them as much, sadly. The illustrations are just lovely! We are reading a children's book for our summer book club! (The Wind in the Willows.)

You always find the most delightful children's books, Diane. I smiled when you mentioned the Little House on the Prairie books, cause it's one of my favorite shows, and watch the re-runs all the time. I have never read the books before though - they look wonderful with the cute illustrations. It sounds like it's been pretty hot there as well, and staying inside and reading and watching a good movie sounds really nice. : )

ps....I don't have Ben Gay at home, but I've been using Advil, and that seems to be helping.

Looks like you got some great buys at your local library. I always seem to miss the event when a library sells off some of its books, and more's the pity. Well done with your purchases.

I love children's books too and going for the evening walks. I go out for evening strolls with my dog Bosco and it's nice to see what is going on in the neighborhood.
Enjoy the week.

I loved the LIttle House on the Prairie books - and the little statue that Ma had on the mantle, her one precious piece, is so iconic, don't you think?

Though I didn't get to Shetland on my trip -- winds were too high -- I'm still enjoying Ann Cleeves Shetland series. Love the setting and the characters.

I will look for that movie. It sounds good! We caught a great one this weekend that my sister recommended, called Maudie. It is a true story and we loved it.

Diane - oh, those drawings from the Little House series brought back so many memories - I love those books and the artist brought the characters to life in such a simple way - how I would like to be able to draw like that! I imagine summer in Florida is like winter in Montana - you can be out in the weather, but it's always good to have a Plan B! Thanks for linking to Mosaic Monday!

I love old children’s books. Each illustration is so pretty. I know little about what books American children were reading back then, but some of the story I know not by books but by TV drama. I remember watching TV drama series from America, Little House on the Prairie, as a young adult. Unfortunately Instant Family was not released at theaters in Japan but the DVD seems to have been released. Have a nice week.

I always appreciate it when blogger recommend a book, movie or product.
Movie recommendations are the way I usually go and see a movie that I don't know anything about.
Thanks for the good stuff!

You know I would've bought every one of those books too, the ones you pictured! I also loved seeing the Little House books illustrations again. Those sure take me back. Incredible how just seeing those illustrations takes me right back to 4th and 5th grade, when I read those, LOL I would've been wearing little plaid dresses with big crisp white collars, sweet little sweaters, and yarn hair bows and patterned leotards under my dresses. (well, we called them leotards, not "tights" back then, ha ha) We used real chalk and chalkboards and right about that time, we were introduced to "cursive" writing and we received our first ink cartridge pens. We were so proud of ourselves, LOL! ----and ineviaibly, there were ink spills, oh what a BIG MESS. I'm not sure, but do kids even learn cursive writing anymore or has that been phased out?? Well, I did love Laura and her family, and made my way though all the books. Did you watch the tv series with Michael Landon years back? I just loved it.

I too love the covers and color plates in the old books. I have several, as I know you do. Although I love my Kindle, there are some books that need to be held and appreciated for their beauty. We've been watching old Kavanaugh QC movies on Prime.. We like John Thaw as Inspector Morse and these are good too.

It is miserably hot and humid here in Tennessee also. If I don't go outside at sunrise, I don't go out at all. You have inspired me to pick up something and read it today whenever I sit down to rest. Forget reading the news; it's always bad.

I love old books too and have several from my Mom (RIP). One of them was the reader she used in school. When I hold it in my hands it amazes me to think that she too held it in her little girl hands. It's (finally) hot here in northern Indiana too but none of us are complaining because we waited so long for it. My body does NOT tolerate the heat though so I stay indoors, except for very early morning. Reading and movie-watching... sounds like a perfect recipe for a hot summer day. :-) Love, Andrea xoxo
