A Wild Backyard!

These turkeys better enjoy the Fall while it lasts!

I've heard there may be a shortage of turkeys for the holidays so their days may be numbered! hahaha! (just kidding!!!)

We have a flock of turkeys that live in our community but it's not often that we see them in our 'neck of the woods'!

We grabbed our cameras and stood in our courtyard snapping pics.

The pathway is the cart path for golf carts to use on the golf course behind our house.

And then, we had a little pop up shower come and cool everyone off.

Shake it off!

And just like that, it passed and the sun came back out. That's typical for us here in Florida.

On one of our hikes this week, I watched some neat bird behavior.

This Red-bellied Woodpecker had an acorn in it's mouth.

I watched as it stored it in a knot in this tree.

Saving it for a rainy day maybe!

Any wildlife at your house this week?

I’m joining Saturday’s critters HERE

and I’d Rather B Birdin’.

I wonder if they remember where they have hidden everything and will return later to eat it. Squirrels who bury nuts in my garden never come back and I have to weed them!

I hadn't heard about the turkey shortage for Thanksgiving. Yesterday my husband said cotton will be in short supply so no more blue jeans or tee shirts. Is there nothing at all that will be scarce this winter? Oh, wait, politicians spouting hot air - of that there is no shortage.

Hello Diane,
Awesome photos of the wild turkeys. They are neat to see wild and free, I hope they stay safe. We have a farm nearby that raises turkeys, selling them for Thanksgiving. Great captures of the Red-bellied Woodpecker. Thank you so much for linking up and sharing your post. Take care, have a happy weekend. PS, I appreciate your comment and visit.

I love the wild turkeys and wish I had some here, but we don't. As far as I know. I started the day before yesterday to keep track of wildlife that I see around here. There seems to be so little of it and fall may not be the right time to begin this project. And I'm not outside all that much. So far: one fence lizard and one cottontail rabbit. I will keep looking when I walk the dogs later this morning. Have a lovely weekend, I so enjoy your blog.

Oh, those turkeys are so entertaining to watch. I used to see them all the time in my old neighborhood. Lovely photos of the Woodpecker. Although he is a beauty of a bird, they are always pecking away. There was one that pecked through the night under the eaves of my house. He finally stopped. I tried everything to shoooo him away, but there are hundreds of them in the mountains. It's good that you got a rain shower! It makes everything clean again.

Have a restful weekend, my friend.

Hi Lavender Dreamer! Nice work on your new header! I admire your location on the golf course! The story of the turkeys is interesting and I enjoyed your photos. Really neat how you caught the rain in that one photo. :-) Thanks for sharing your blog. Happy weekend and week ahead to you and Mr L D. John

Now that I see and read your post, I thought about all the times we've been in FL (years ago) and never saw ONE flipping turkey...not one! Alligators crossing the lawn, YES; turkeys NO!...jp

Have a wonderful weekend!

Might be a shortage of turkeys here as well but they are safe from me as I'm not keen on it. Nothing of interest with wildlife apart from garden birds and Red Kites flying over

I like the turkey pictures but those pictures of the acorn in the mouth have just stopped me in my tracks. How cool is that!

We had wild turkeys in a couple of our neighborhoods when we lived in NC. I saw a great blue heron on my walk on the beach yesterday. It was almost as tall as me!

I've never seen a wild turkey. There was one living in our neighbourhood a year ago and I can't wandering around hoping to see it but had no luck. I bet a squirrel finds that acorn!

Wild turkeys were scarce a generation ago, but they have made a comeback in many places in North America. Maybe we really SHOULD consider them for Thanksgiving!

In our yard it's the red squirrels chasing each other or busy storing a cache of pine cones. No turkeys in our yard but we often see them along the roadsides.

Haven't seen any turkeys walking around here, I don't think they would like it here with all the rain and wind. Nice photos, have a wonderful weekend.

I really like that Woodpecker, also because he doesn't live in my corner of the world.
Happy weekend!

Great pictures, and a neat one with the acorn stashing. lol
Love turkeys, but see them, I run back inside. They are cranky birds. I guess they know about Thanksgiving. :)

I had wild turkey a long time ago for Thanksgiving. It wasn't very good. Give me a good old Honeysuckle White any day.
The only wildlife I've seen around here are the local teens with their odd clothing and funny colored hair

Love your pics of wild life! This is the first year we saw a Ca. scrub blue jay on our feeder. It was big and noisy. We see squirrels and rabbits regularly. The squirrels are not the big fluffy ones I see in blogs. Ours are skinny, gray, short hair critters. We see an occasional coyote but there are a lot of hawks flying overhead. Love to hear them screech. Years ago we saw deer, fox, and bob cats on a regular basis but our town went from 1,400 to a city of 125,000 and we never see them anymore. When we vacationed in Nebraska a few years back, I was so excited to see 10 turkeys walking up someones driveway. I was quite sure they got out of their cage. Found out they are wild and wander all over. Patty McDonald

We see a hedgehog and a rabbit quite regularly.

Then, our son next door's newer chickens often fly up on the fence, and come over to visit. This is not allowed, since our back yard is not fenced in. So I have to call with a "Chicken Alert," so someone comes and gets them back in. -grin-

Oh those are big fat toms compared to the skinny ones we saw in Northern California while staying there. You live in a wonderland!

there is alot of squirrels here at the senior apts on my side of Florida (east coast) and one day this week one little guy was in a panic and someone came out the front lobby door and he ran into the lobby--I am happy to say that our 2 janitorial men showed up and was easily able to guide him back out the front door!!! and today I seen one--he was red body to the first inch of his tail--then the rest of his tail was dark grey with lighter colored rings on it--and Florida squirrels are so small compared to the squirrels we had in NY!!!!

I love it that you got to watch the woodpecker storing away his winter food. The turkeys would be a lot of fun to watch. Wildlife here has been in short supply! A few lizards in the garden and that's about it. Have a wonderful new week!

That's def a different bird! And lots of them. I am told that they don't taste veey good—too gamey.

Love the photo of the wet turkey shaking it off! Interesting about the woodpecker, I've watched ours storing food but it's usually something out of the suet feeder not acorns. Hope you are having a wonderful weekend!

How neat to see so many turkeys. I haven't seen turkeys since I quit work at the state park. I've watched blue jays stuffing peanuts into places of a tree for a later day, but have never caught our Red-bellied Woodpecker hiding any of our acorns. Really nice photos.

Hello Diane,:=) What a fantastic sight! The only turkeys I see are the ones wrapped up in the Supermarket.:=)) Great shots of the Woodpecker. These are rare captures, Thanks for the close up of the acorn. Just like the squirrels I see hiding the peanuts around my garden, the Woody is storing acorns for when there is a shortage of food. I hope his memory is better than the squirrels!:=)

Beautiful photos of the red-bellied woodpecker.
Very clever to save it and then eat it again later.
The turkeys are beautiful.

What a fine flock of turkeys! I can see why Benjamin Franklin thought they were such a wonderful bird. We had only unpleasant wildlife this weekend, but God put them all on the earth...!

Wow, that is some herd of turkeys!!! I don't see them much where I live now but I used to see some hiking through my backyard in winter when I lived in Quebec!

Hello! I have missed visiting with you here! Your photos are beautiful! And those turkeys!!! We have some deer and geese in our yard this time of year. And some squirrels gathering their food for winter! How is your Jeep??? Did I tell you I got a new one? My husband has a dealership, and actually needed mine to sell. So I got to order a new one! I will post a pic soon. And have you heard of the Jeep Ducking? I got one this week! Have a cozy afternoon, my friend!

That's one critter we do not have at the ranch! I'll have to ask Dean and Sherry why not?? We do have the pair of pea fowl in the pen and one male strutting around. The turkeys I have seen up close and personal (at the children's petting farm) were pretty but so big and imtimidating!
Love seeing whay YOU see on your hikes!!

That is ALOT OF TURKEYS! wow, a big big group. Yep, that sure does make me think of thanksgiving and hard to believe it's already on it's way! Fall came on quick. Have y'all been on any good adventures lately? It's still HOT HERE.......SIGH.... but at least it's getting cooler than it was and we are walking, but it's not "pleasant" yet, LOl! and the dang "SKEETERS"--DANGBLASTED VARMITS!!---they are out to get us, ha ha. Hugs!

I know you are just joking Carol. But, are your wild turkeys subject to people trying catch them in the coming weeks or are they a protected species?

Yes, I enjoyed my two weeks with a Suzuki Jimny but a Red Wrangler would have been better!

so many turkeys would probably made me uncomfortable. They are so big and I was scared of them when I was little. I still don´t trust them :)
Love the woodpecker hiding acorn. But, what is the red on the tree? Some kind of liechen?? Looks like flowers, they are beautiful.
