Florida summers - July sightings

It's been too hot to get many hikes in this month but it's always a good month for the birds.

I packed a picnic lunch and drove over to Pruitt one day. There are 2 trailheads there and quite a lot you can see from the Jeep.

I took a short hike on the Halpata Tastanaki Preserve trail but my hike was cut short by lightening in the distance. Florida is flat so you can see for quite a distance but it looked like the clouds and storm were headed my way. So I got back to the Jeep and decided to leave. I did get a few sprinkles of rain on the way back. It's only 10 miles away and the pop up showers are usually very isolated. It had rained harder at my house while I was gone.

I saw quite a lot on that short hike though so let's see what we have.

Red Shouldered Hawk (looks like a young one)

Do you see him on the post?

I rolled my window down and took these from the Jeep!

White Eyed Vireo

Eastern Meadowlark.

And a Loggerhead Shrike.

I also saw a beautiful herd of deer but I think I'll save those for another day.

There are still so many wildflowers in bloom! Lots of bees and butterflies.

Gulf Fritillary on Stinging Nettle

I was glad I drove over there to spend some time in nature. I always have a good day when some of it is spent in the great outdoors. Do you feel the same way?

...I LOVE the butterfly. Thanks for going out in the heat to capture it.

super bird shots to be found from your jeep. any time I leave home it is a good thing, just to be out of the house. beautiful white eyed vereo.. I like the fact we have radar to tell us when we can go or run back to the car and wait for it to pass. I was in Publix and looked out to a pour down, waited a few minutes and the sun was shining again

It's nearly the end of the Mosaic Monday round and I'm just getting around to visiting, but I see that you have a lovely new post, right up my alley--birds and butterflies, and not to forget jeeps. Yours is taking you a lot of interesting places that I'm glad you are sharing.

You could take beautiful series of photos during your walk.
We will get really high temperatures here in the Netherlands on Monday, above 35 degrees Celsius.
Photos 3, 6 and 9 are my favorite.
Greetings Irma

Wonderful photos. Glad you were able to get out for a while. I do enjoy getting out but so rarely do. I need to work on changing that.

Great photos of the hawk! Interesting, I saw one yesterday while driving, but couldn't get a good photo!! I'm glad you're getting out for hikes, that's just wonderful. But yeah, lightning...whenever I see it, I run for cover, even if it's far away! ☺

i read a comment from you on my post, now it is gone. focusing on the swans i think. it is so weird...well, it's gone, maybe it will come back!!!

Yes I do see him, and it's funny but I see so many of these great hunters every single day, especially next to the highway that I travel to work, and other places. They are such grand hungry and devoted hunters aren't they.

The orange butterfly is interesting and so pretty. And that young Hawk is sweet. Has a cute face. When Nel lived in Georgia, she told me of those pop up showers that you often get in the Summers. Thanks for taking us along on your hike, Diane. It's always a pleasure to see things of nature. Have a peaceful weekend.

Your bird photos are wonderful. It must be a treat to find so many species along the trail when you don’t even have a lot of time.
A shrike is especially nice.

I know that rain can come on very quickly in Florida. Your picks are fabulous. That Red Shouldered Hawk looks regal! Do you use your iPhone to take the shots from your car?

Lovely captures of the hawk!

In Florida we generally started our walks about an hour to 45 minutes before sunrise, all year round. This did help us avoid the expressive summer sun as well as the "pop-up" showers. Now, in Connecticut the summer sun seems every bit as strong, though the season will be so much shorter.

Your bird photos are great! I love the Deer on your Head page. Plan B turned out well, being it is too hot to hike!! Happy Sunday! Love, Aunt Helen

Dear Diane,
of course I feel the same way! :-) The little Red Shouldered Hawk looks a bit disheveled - it must not have known its photo was going to be on the internet ;-DD Very nice bird and butterfly sightings - and I'm curious about your deer photos!
Happy new week and best wishes, Traude
