Slow hiking in the heat of the summer!

I wanted to give these beautiful deer there very own post.

I parked at the Pruitt trailhead to hike the Halpata Tastanaki Preserve trail. There's a locked gate with a small opening so after I walk through that, I'm on an old roadbed. And later it is grassy but we won't get that far today. My hike was cut short because of a thunderstorm that was headed my way.

When I looked ahead at an old fence line with shade from huge Live Oak Trees, it looked like a goat standing there.

I walked slow and steady hoping I wouldn't spook whatever it was.

And when I got closer, it looked like one of the deer was lying down, which is unusual.

One of the deer stayed in sight and the others went back into the tall grasses.

And just when I was zoomed in with my camera!

I had another deer photobomb me! That gave me a start!

This deer ran across the road right in front of me.

I didn't get to walk much farther before the one young deer decided I was close enough and the lady in the pink cap might indeed be a threat. So he bounded off too. But it sure was a neat sighting.

I walked far enough to look out at the preserve and take a few wildflower photos. And then I walked at a faster pace to get back to the Jeep and come home. But I sure felt exhilarated after such a neat sighting!

St. John's Wort with a tiny insect

We've had more pop up rain showers but we've also found a few openings to get out on the trails! I hope you have too!

I’m joining Thankful Thursdays and

I like Thursdays HERE too!

Its such a treat to be able to interact with nature and get close to the deer. Great photos . We have a lot of deer in our surroundings and neighborhood in Pennsylvania ( where I live in the summer). they usually sprint off before I can get a good photo.

Great Pictures! I especially like your new header.

Off subject... The Cowgirl Museum has a whole section on Annie Oakley, and even a life sized talking hologram of her. If you ever come to town, left me know and I will tour you myself...Janey

So pleasant to hang out with you. I like your pink hat

I'm sure that photo bomber did startle you, but it made for a great photo. We were seeing deer daily a few months ago. I don't know where they've gone now. Hopefully they will be back in the fall as they are fun to watch.
Off topic, with regards to the comment you left me about baking with almond flour, I am wondering if you substitute it in equal amounts as regular AP flour? I was recently given a bag of almond flour and coconut flour. I'm not sure how to use them and don't want to waste them.
Thanks.

I am just amazed at all of your hiking experiences. Girl...please send me the list of vitamins you take! LOL! Hiking in the heat we have would take a toll on me for me. The older I get the less I can deal with heat and humidity. What beautiful pictures of those deer. I hope your week is wonderful. Hugs and blessings, Cindy

No trails for me in this heat. I work in the mornings so I will have to wait for cooler temps to lure me out on a hike. I do love seeing all the wonderful photos you share. Your deer encounter was awesome!! xo

Great sighting of the deer. You were blessed with a photo bombing deer. Pretty yellow flowers and an unusual insect. It is very hot here. Grey sky and could hear the thunder rumbling but no rain.

This excessive heat is worldwide and devastating. A friend of mine in central Britain recently experienced 40 degrees in an area where a normal summer's day is around 23. Few houses there have air conditioning since they usually don't need it. People and animals are dying. Anthropogenic heat is cooking the planet.

Oh how wonderful to see the deer like that! Aren't they wonderful? I just feel like I've stepped back into time and a world without all the clutter of modern life when I can spend time watching the deer (and when they watch me too). Thank you for these lovely photos! And how fun that the older deer jumped out so near you! Apparently he/she (I couldn't see if it had antlers or not) was trying to come between you and her offspring, who looked much younger. You were blessed to get a picture of her as well, especially when she surprised you like that! What fun!! I know how excited you must have been! Thank you for sharing your joys with us!

There are a lot of deer here also. And they can be difficult to photograph. As always, you got some great photos.

Looks like you have a good population of deer. I can go weeks or even months without seeing a deer but I am always thrilled when I do.

You were so fortunate to see so many beautiful Deer on your hike. They are so amazing! It is so fun for me to see all the things you see; as I wouldn't be able to go on a hike. Thank you for your wonderful photos. Keep on keeping on!! Love, Aunt Helen

It doesn't have to be a long hike to see wonders like these deer! and the tiny insect in the pretty flower (I will try to remember it is called St John's Wort). I learn something new from every one of your hikes -- short and long.
I'm glad you cut the hike short. Thunderstorms are scary!

Yes, I understood, Diana, why this deer should have a own post. It's indeed fantastisc. Thank you for sharing.

I couldn't hike therefore I'm very glad to read such lovely posts, like yours.
