You don't have to be Southern to walk with me to the hog waller! And I'll tell you why....there weren't any wild hogs there so we can relax and enjoy the trip! And if you want to call it a 'wallow' I won't hold it against you. I looked up the definition of hog wallow, "The shallow depression denuded of vegetation and potentially muddy, created by the wallowing of hogs." Sounds a lot like a hog waller! hahahaha!
The first time we hiked this side trail we found a mud bog with hog prints and hog 'wallers' so that's what we named it.
Most of the time, you can't get down this trail because the grass is grown up or the sand is too soft to walk on. But it was perfect a few days ago.
Imagine our surprise to see such a pretty sight!
It looked more like a tropical garden that a hog waller.

Funny how we read words differently. When I see "waller" I read it as in the profession in Europe know as a "dry stone waller," a person who constructs walls without mortar. So your waller connotes depressions in the ground, mine the building of a wall.

My mother used to scold us girls for "wallering" on our bed during the day time.lol My children loved that word when they were little. They still will say, You stop wallering on the bed! That is a truly lovely vista....glad no wild hogs were there wallering.:)
For our first date, my husband and I took a hike on Catalina Island in California. We didn't see a hog waller but we did hear feral pigs in the brush. That was even more scary than finding a wild buffalo. I know both of those can be aggressive if you enter their territory. We safely got from the airport to a bluff over the ocean and back, and have been married now for 41 years. - Margy

Oh, that is so neat. I have never discovered a true "hog waller" in the wild. I thought you were going to take us to the "Hog Waller Mud Bog" place up on route 310 just south of Interlachen. It is a place where people go with their big mud bogging trucks and play in the mud on the weekends. I'm glad you didn't show us pictures of that. Your Hog Waller is much much prettier, and the real deal. I love that you found that pretty place. And yes, that is a perfect tree...and I love your mosaic of pictures...the bumblebee is so good...and the cactus flower...they have been so pretty this spring. I love them. Yes, you found some great pictures. Thank you for sharing them with us!
We raised hogs when I was growing up, so I'm very familiar with a waller!! LOL
They do love to wallow around in the mud. Lovely little spot you found, but a word of caution, if you see a wild hog you might want to go the other way, they can be aggressive.

I've learned more about Florida and her nature from the pictures you take on your hikes than I ever knew. Well, I knew almost nothing, Everglades, perhaps,and the Florida Keys, some beaches here and there. But what you show us with your gorgeous pictures it something I had no idea existed.
Nothing new and exciting here except I got to see my chiropractor!! Appointments are back on track. Our parks and trails aren't open yet and I won't be seeking them out for a couple more months - then with two new knees, perhaps I can really enjoy a walk! Thanks for taking us along on yours!

I'm learning "southern" from your blog! Some new flowers are blooming in the woods and in my garden. I corrected some assignments from my students with tons of new errors in them. Those new things I'd rather do without.

Hog wallow and hog wallers have got to be the same thing with different accents, right? I love the sound of it both ways. It is pretty and hats off to you for recognizing hog prints.

i guess wild hogs are a terrible thing in Florida, but I always kinda get a kick out of seeing them. That’s a pretty place to walk.

No, haven't seen anything too attractive outside lately. We don't have too much traffic on the street, but there is a three-year-old who takes a spin in his little roadster...so cute!
hOWDY MY SWEET FRIEND! Where I come from---its a waller!! haha lOL Yours is the prettiest one Ive ever seen though!! love all the other pictures too, so pretty. Hope your week is going great so far. Ours--pretty quiet. I miss our long walks...free to walk anywhere you please and w/out worry of who is zooming up on you or close to you, not even caring about safe distancing. It's nerve wracking for sure. ha ha. Hardly anyone uses masks, even when real close to others, and they SHOULD. Unless you are out in the woods or in big open spaces where you aren't breathing on others ya know? (like where y'all walk safely) We do stay busy planning and putting things in our garden, getting seeds and starts going. That is fun
The hog waller looks so green and lush and tropical. That old tree is beautiful. I wonder how old it is. That is one BIG bumble bee. Looks like a Queen bee hehehe. She goes perfect in your collage with the yellow flowers. It looks like Florida has some nice weather right now.
