I Spy Something Red!

It's not always possible to find answers to your questions when you view your photos from a hike.

But it sure is fun when you do!

So what happened to the red berry?

We saw the Red-bellied Woodpecker with a red berry in his beak in one of my photos.

And then we found it stashed away in a little crevice of the old snag of a tree when we looked at hubby's photos. Of course the most interesting part of the photo is the yummy snack the woodpecker has pulled out of the top of the tree. But do you see the red berry above?

It seems like we see Woodpeckers on every hike this summer.

This Pileated Woodpecker is right in the center of this photo.

But we managed to change our angle and get a few more.

He's so beautiful!

And we've seen a few Red Headed Woodpeckers. Not many. Just a few so far.

 Red headed Woodpecker

And I love seeing a young one (possibly a Red-bellied Woodpecker) that doesn't have much color at all.

The Flicker is a neat sighting too.

Do you see the red on the back of his head?

We started this post with a red berry.

How about this beautiful red Cardinal flower to end it! We're getting out for more hikes lately!

A few people asked if the Luna Moth I featured in a post HERE was still alive when we saw it. Yes, it was alive but struggling. It was flapping it's wings and flopping around on the ground, not flying away. I guess it was at the end of it's life.

I’m joining Saturday’s critters HERE

and I’d Rather B Birdin’.

Those woodpeckers are huge and noisy. I was very glad when a pair of them moved on from my neighbor's tree. I hope that he didn't forget his red berry for dessert.

I'll soon be posting a pic of a woodpecker that might be red bellied or piliated. He doesn't have the crest, though. So I'm glad you posted these... it helps! Gorgeous birds, all!

Oh, you got some great photos of the woodpeckers...all of them. And to see a real red headed woodpecker is a treat. We don't often see them. I love that you got such good close ups of the woodpecker and the red berry, etc. That is really cool. And that Luna Moth is so beautiful. I guess they can't live forever, but it is such a treat to see one. Thank you for sharing.

Hello,
Wonderful variety of woodpeckers. Great theme with the captures of the red.
The Cardinal flowers are pretty, sad to hear the Luna Moth barely surviving.
Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Take care, have a happy weekend.

Super collection of peckers Diane. I like that you ask questions about what you see. It's the basis of good birding and science. You know,in this area of Lancashire we have just one woodpecker species so it's a real treat to your different ones.

Love the woodpeckers! Fun to see the pileated one with it’s treat.

Dearest Diane,
it's really interesting what the woodpecker does with the red berry. Maybe he wanted to eat it first and then thought the other treat is better? Or maybe these berries have a special smell or juice that can be used to stun maggots etc. and so they are easier prey? Really a lot of questions - but above all you have a lot of beautiful photos with beautiful red. I think the Pileated Woodpecker looks particularly cool, a real little punk. I am very happy about your great bird sightings. Thank you very much for answering the question of whether the moth is still alive - I was indeed afraid that it was no longer the fittest...
All the best and happy weekend!

Have a nice weekend.

what great photos. I laughed to see that the woodpecker had put the berry away. I haven't heard of that behavior until now. I love pileateds, too, until they get so close to the house that their banging gets crazy. ;-)

Almost the only woodpeckers I see are little Downy ones. They seem to like living in the city.

Oh, I enjoyed this post, Diane, as I always have to stop for red flowers and red birds. The Pileated Woodpecker is such a beauty, and I used to see so many Red Headed Woodpeckers in my hometown. They are so pretty with their red patch on the top of their head. The red cardinal flower is very pretty. That's a nice photo. You had a wonderful hiking day seeing all things RED!

Have a relaxing weekend.

That luna moth is beautiful. I've never seen one. I've seen a ton of woodpeckers this summer too. I was visiting in Cape Cod and they seemed to be pecking at every tree.

Glad it has cooled down a little bit (or else you are getting used to the heat and hiking anyway!) Wonderful.
