"Reading to Find Out"

I love old children's books and have a nice collection.

My favorite books are the old school book 'readers' from the '50s and '60s, when I was a girl.

I have the perfect spot for a small bookcase near my kitchen so I have most of the readers in this bookcase. And one of my favorite chores is working in my books. So when I dusted the shelves, I spent some time looking through some of them. (or was it that I was looking through old books and decided to dust....I forget! hahaha) But it seemed like a good time to take a few photos!

I guess a lot of us learned to read with the Dick and Jane books.

I have children's books that are a lot older than I am....just saying!

I love them all!

Do you have a favorite that meant a lot to you?

I’m joining Angie for Mosaic Monday HERE .

What an interesting thing to collect!
I used to have some old books from the 20s, which I used in displays in my classrooms.

My earliest memories of reading are of a series of books about nature designed for children - birds, wildflowers, seashores, trees etc. I remember being a voracious reader of those and getting in trouble with the library for underlining important points! I did it with a ruler though, so it was pretty neat.

You do have a great collection. Do you remember reading any of these specifically? My favorite was “On Cherry Street,” though I vividly remember the cover of one first or second grade reader with an evil looking woman in a cave on the cover. The stuff of childhood nightmares perhaps. 🙂

Beautiful collection. My wife has old books too, memories from the time she was an elementary student.

I remember vaguely the dick and jane reader, but not very well. it is amazing you have found so many and good to save them, since they are fast becoming extinct. you can pass them on and on for kids who have never seen a book to see what used to be. I had no favorite school books, but read Tarzan and the city of Gold and Bomba until the books fell apart. I think I got Tarzan at age 10, that would be 1954

Old school books are my absolute favorite. Like you I have a collection. I have purchased my old readers, my old science books and some similar history books with a few library books thrown in. I love looking at them. They make me very happy.

Oh, what a great collection. Childhood books hold so many memories for me. Many I've bought in up-to-date editions so that I can read and reread them, but I still have my original copy of a Raggedy Ann book that I've had for over 50 years.

See Jane run. Run Jane run! Oh the memories you brought back. If I were to collect old children's books, I'd like that one and some old fairy tale books. Remember the color books? The blue book or red book of fairy tales?

What a fun collection of old books, Diane. I learned to read with Dick and Jane and looking at the covers of your books I'm taken back to Grade One with Mrs. Cook.
I used to love the Bobbsey Twins and Nancy Drew books, although I read just about anything.

Diane - the books that I remember most from my childhood were "Black Beauty", "Tom Sawyer", "Anne of Green Gables", "Heidi", etc. My parents had a set that I think came as a "special gift" after they bought a set of encyclopedias (imagine that) and I read them all over and over. Come to think of it, I am not sure what happened to them … sigh. Thanks for linking to Mosaic Monday!

I simply adore classic children's books too! Those dear old Little Golden Books - with sweet little stories and principles to live by. Those will always be my favorite!

Your pictures are so beautiful! I can almost feel them in my hands... turning the page once again...

Blessings on your day! Net

I love old books. I love old children's books. I love old children's readers!! I have a few but you have far more than me. They are so fun to sit down and look at....I love the old fashioned pictures and seeing how the children are dressed, and the old "automobiles" and the way the vintage homes and furniture looked. Our world has changed so much. I loved this post and love how you fixed up your little book shelf. That little stove is so so cute! I had a little toy stove, I wished I had saved these things. What I remember most is my little play washer and dryer, you could put real water in it, I loved playing with that thing! I was probably about five or six maybe. I'll have to try and find my pictures of it.

So glad I found you again. I have my childhood books lined up in boxes in my hallway. Trying to figure out how to display them where the kids won't tear them apart.

Oh, I just love your children's books, Diane. You have them nicely organized on the shelf, and the school bus is such a cute addition. That little porcelain girl reading is so cute too. I love when you share all your precious children's books with us. To answer your question, I love The Berenstain Bears books, and those were my favorite to read to the kids when they were little. I still have quite a few of them. : )
